Knobbly tyres for DR650SE - recommendations?
« on: November 16, 2012, 08:44:42 pm »
I need to put new tyres on to my DR650SE soon.
I plan to use the bike mainly on dirt roads (will have to travel on tar to get to the dirt roads, but plan to travel on dirt whenever possible). I don't commute on the DR650SE and so am able to use it only for touring - hence my considering dirt-focussed tyres. I also will not be carrying a pillion, but will be carrying luggage, including a tent, sleeping bag, stretcher, etc.
I am considering using the Mitas C-02 on the rear, but not sure what to use up front.
Any advice and recommendations (tyres, front and rear combination and pressures) based on experience would be appreciated.

Mitas C17 goes well with the CO2, this is the combo I am using on my XR and I'm very happy with it so far.

Also appears to be lasting very well.
How can I be lost when I have got nowhere to go?

Agree very good tires and they last fairly well and are safe on tar too. They work very well on dirt roads even in rainy Cape winters. Not ideal in bottomless sand and not aggressive enough for deep & snotty clay but thatz IMHO does not really qualify as "dirt road" any more ???

The KT966 looks a bit less cool than the CO2 but:

You need to ride to the dirt as you said.
The 5.1 KT966 (you also get a narrower one)) back tyre is a 6 ply. I am convinced you get less punctures with these than with most others.  Front tyre is normal 4 ply with lekker stiff side wall.

Good tyres on the dirt and gives reasonable life.  Only negative to me is that I sometimes find it difficult to break the bead and to get it properly seated when changing, especially when new as they go stiffly on my rim.

I followed Le Cap's advice on the KT966 and have nothing but good to say at this point , just don't back it into a corner on a wet tar road.

I never had punctures with the KT966 and heavy duty tubes - so can't comment on how easy it is to fix a puncture but I think it will be a bit of a mission! The tubes are difficult to work with.

We ride a lot and mostly dirt. The best combination so far on my DR is a Mitas E09 on the back and a T63 on the front.
Handles dirt, rocks, sand and the tar wet or dry in fine style.
We ride about 500 to 600km a week.

After years of testing and wandering in the tyre wilderness, it is the rear 140 Mitas E-07 and the 21" Pirelli MT21 front. Best combo all over.

How good is the E-07 in mud and in loose rocks?

Currently have the CO2 which is great for that, just maybe wearing a bit fast for my liking.

I found Mitas E07 and Kings KT966 to be on par performance wise. Seem to give similar service life too. The Kings is noisy on tar (not that it bothers me). Kings always used to be a tad cheaper which finally sold them to me.

I run Mitas E-07 front and back.
130 on the back, a 140 does not clear the swing-arm on my bike
I get 8-9k from the back and the front 15k.
They work really well on tar you can confidently crank it over in corners.
Went to Kozi bay last week and they did okay in the sand as well.

Whoops forgot the topic these are not knobbly but a 50/50 tyre.

I've always been happy with Bridgestone Trail Wings, which are OEM for both my Yamaha XT600e and DR650.
But the last sets I got were very "squirmy" on both bikes for a couple of thousand km, before settling down.
Any insights?

Look at Michelin T63 front and back.....massive bang for buck. The fronts we know are awesome but the reports in is that the rears last very well considering the compond. Great winter tyre on tar to.

Best combo so far for my XT is the T63 front  and the Mitas E09 rear. Handling wise. :thumleft:
Never had a puncture on the E09.
One thing I must say I have never had so many pinched tubes ever in my life as with the T63 front. I am just about
gauranteed 1 + pinched tube per ride. I run my front at 2bar mostly except in sand I go down to 1.6bar. All my pinched tubes
I got were at 2bar. I am heavy and bike is mostly loaded about  150kg when I am on a trip. Not sure if I can blame the tyre though.
Another thing is I get about half the fantastic km's most of the oke's are reporting with these tyres. Sure I can still run them far
on the "meat" left on the tyre ,but when do a knobbly cease to be a good knobbly anymore but just becomes another really crap road type tyre ?

T63 on the front works very well. Have a E07 on the rear and it is "okay" but nothing to write home about - wish I had gone for the E09.

I never had a pinch on the E09 front (dakar spec), and that's with the Wilbers front springs. I was also running 2 bar.

The rear was pretty much done after 4 000kms when I sold the bike, front still looked brand new! But I must add saving the rear tread was not very high on my list >:D
