THE FAMILY RIOT TRIP
« on: December 09, 2012, 10:29:04 am »
After my recent knee replacement operation I was temporally out of action for a month or so.   ???   As the knee started to heal, I was itching to get going on the scoot, this is where the riots started.  :patch:  I wanted to ride, the wife was adamant, you will not ride until the knee is 100%, when is 100%, for me it was almost 100%.  :deal:  At the end I had 4 opinions, the Doctor’s, my wife’s, my friends and then mine.  :spitcoffee:  I thought mine was the right one, but obviously I was mistaken. :eek7:
On the other hand my wife wanted someone to pillion her  ::) as she was also getting withdrawal symptoms  ;D, and this is where I played my hand.   I stopped to moan and groan like an old bear with a sore tooth and the waiting game started…………………  :pot:. Then the compliments started rolling in like “I see you walking much better”, “you not limping anymore” .  Then, last weekend we agreed to do a little test run, it was a success and we decided to do a proper run this Saturday.  Needless to say, I am a happy camper.  :thumleft:

Now for the trip itself.  I planned a 400 km round trip, just for starters, as I knew I was really unfit (it was almost 3 months since our last trip) and I did not want to take unnecessary chances with the knee.  It is a combination of 50/50 gravel and tar.  Methinks this will be more a photo report (PR) as a ride report (RR).  My wife was so glad just to ride again, she couldn’t stop taking pictures, not that I’m complaining, because we really did ride through some stunning places.
The day eventually arrived with rain and mist in the air, but there was nothing that was going to stop us today  :deal:, so let’s get down to business.

The route.

As usual we are early birds and at 6:30 we were on the road just to be stopped on the way to Grahamstown.

Bionic man

On our way to Grahamstown, getting into the groove.

On the way to Grahamstown we took a little detour down the Coombs road, and redirected our route to the N2, it was not in our planning but I just love the scenery on this piece of road.

We had the whole day and stopped at Grahamstown for a coffee.

Then it was onto the Highlands road towards Alicedale.  It was misty and a slight drizzle were present, nothing serious, but it was evident that it did rain pretty hard earlier.

And we had some fun…….

Just after the train bridge above, there is a turnoff to the right, my Garmin showed that it is an alternative road to Alicedale, so we tried it out.
The road was not too bad with beautiful scenery and some wildlife.

Unfortunately the road ended by this gate and we had to turn around, luckily it was only 7 odd km’s in.

It was back on the Highlands road down to Alicedale, we had one or two obstacle to negotiate.

Almost in Alicedale, road in a distance.

In Alicedale I fixed the top box bracket that broke off again and took the road over the mountain to Riebeek East.

This was our 1st time on this road and it did not disappoint, some nice scenery and the little pass was also not too shabby.

The view from the top.

The view from the top was awesome, but the road was not so good.

The last 3km’s down to Riebeek East was a breeze.

Just on the outside of Riebeek East there is a little road that branch of to the Carlisle Bridge that we never did before, so we took it and what a wonderful surprise, this is one of the most beautiful scenic routes that we did in a long time.

When we stopped to open a farm gate I smelled something like when a tire is deflating, and low and behold, the back tire was deflating at an alarming rate. ???  It was time for some repairs, and as we took the Swanniebraai with, we decided it would be the right time to braai.

Removing the culprit

Time to plug the hole, it was so large, I had to use two plugs, and I still did not know if it would work.

The pump did the job and luck was on our side, the plug was holding, the test however, would be once we were on the road again.

A well deserved refreshment.

Time to start the Swanniebraai

If you have a Swanniebraai, you need meat, so we slaughtered a sheep………

….prepared the meat and made some wors……..

……and had a nice braai……….

……in the middle of the road.

The proof is in the pudding, and it was delicious, these Swanniebraai’s are the bisniss, the meat was nice and tender and the wors was nice and juicy.

Swanniebraai cooling off.  This was real quick, I think it took me longer to fix the puncture than braaing the meat.

We were refueled and the tire was hopefully fixed, and it was on the road again, we passed Carlisle bridge, took a right turn and another couples of turns to the left and right on back roads to Fort Buafort.
Saw this big old man on the road.

And this couple.

Then some scenery to end the day.

I just love old signs.

Slabbing the last stretch home.

What a wonderful trip and day we had, sorry for all the pictures, but I did not know which to choose or which to leave out.  The good news is that the knee held up pretty good, not once did I had any pain or discomfort.  The tire also lasted the rest of the trip.  What did not hold up was my butt and arms, I still need some time to get fully ride fit again, but that is the least of my worries.

Until the next time
