After my recent knee replacement operation I was temporally out of action for a month or so.  ???  As the knee started to heal, I was itching to get going on the scoot, this is where the riots started.  :patch:  I wanted to ride, the wife was adamant, you will not ride until the knee is 100%, when is 100%, for me it was almost 100%.  :deal:  At the end I had 4 opinions, the Doctor’s, my wife’s, my friends and then mine.  :spitcoffee:  I thought mine was the right one, but obviously I was mistaken. :eek7:
On the other hand my wife wanted someone to pillion her  ::) as she was also getting withdrawal symptoms  ;D, and this is where I played my hand.   I stopped to moan and groan like an old bear with a sore tooth and the waiting game started…………………  :pot:. Then the compliments started rolling in like “I see you walking much better”, “you not limping anymore” .  Then, last weekend we agreed to do a little test run, it was a success and we decided to do a proper run this Saturday.  Needless to say, I am a happy camper.  :thumleft:

Now for the trip itself.  I planned a 400 km round trip, just for starters, as I knew I was really unfit (it was almost 3 months since our last trip) and I did not want to take unnecessary chances with the knee.  It is a combination of 50/50 gravel and tar.  Methinks this will be more a photo report (PR) as a ride report (RR).  My wife was so glad just to ride again, she couldn’t stop taking pictures, not that I’m complaining, because we really did ride through some stunning places.
The day eventually arrived with rain and mist in the air, but there was nothing that was going to stop us today  :deal:, so let’s get down to business.

The route.

As usual we are early birds and at 6:30 we were on the road just to be stopped on the way to Grahamstown.

On our way to Grahamstown, getting into the groove.

On the way to Grahamstown we took a little detour down the Coombs road, and redirected our route to the N2, it was not in our planning but I just love the scenery on this piece of road.

We had the whole day and stopped at Grahamstown for a coffee.

Then it was onto the Highlands road towards Alicedale.  It was misty and a slight drizzle were present, nothing serious, but it was evident that it did rain pretty hard earlier.

Just after the train bridge above, there is a turnoff to the right, my Garmin showed that it is an alternative road to Alicedale, so we tried it out.
The road was not too bad with beautiful scenery and some wildlife.

Unfortunately the road ended by this gate and we had to turn around, luckily it was only 7 odd km’s in.

It was back on the Highlands road down to Alicedale, we had one or two obstacle to negotiate.
