Stupid question 1 (of more)
« on: December 09, 2012, 02:36:01 pm »
On the KTM, 640 Adv, 2001, there is a lever above the clutch lever. Apparently it is a decompresion lever.

How is it used?

And when do you use it?

 :dontknow:

Hey boet.

It is a Hot Start lever. It goes to the carb and acts like a choke to start the bike when the bike is hot! I must be honest as i have never used mine!

Cheers

Thank you.

Had to start the bike a couple of times today while riding. Just used happy button, but I am sure somewhere something is giving up the gost cause on occasion it sounds like the starter does not want to turn, put bike in nutral and it goes immediate.

Also if I turn dead left, bike dies by itself. Not sure why. Happened when we ran out of road and had to man handle them to turn around.

Check the wires from the ignition that may have chaffed against the frame. Put insulation tape and you stop your problem!

It can only die if no fuel or no spark.

So simulate the turn, and check if the fuel line is pinched, or the electrics are shorted out.  Sounds electrical, so look for the chafed wires, or things touching that should not.

There is a decompression lever and a choke. The decompression lever is used to push through the kickstarter before kick starting the bike. The choke is for cold starts. If the bike struggles to start while hot, you need to have the valve clearances checked

The lever above the clutch is the decompression lever. The button behind it is the choke

I stand to be corrected but the decompressor on new bikes is built into the exhaust cam, it has a counter weight that when spinning it stops the decompressing!

It's a decompression lever to be used before kick starting.

You will also find (even new) 640's refuse to swing the starter because of compression. Holding or repeatedly hitting the starter fries your battery. Pull the decomp and hot the button again, as soon as the starter swings, drop the decomp and bob's your uncle.
