Okay, in the spirit of this forum and sharing knowledge, here are my lessons for replacing the instrument cluster on a 2005 R1200GS

First off, there are differences between the pre-07 and the post-07 clusters. Pre-07 have a different connector to the LCD and the stepper motors are also soldered to the PCB. Later units are easy to remove the LCD, pre-07 is very difficult without cracking the LCD. If you have to get the unit replaced on a pre-07 model, BMW can't sync the miles. They can sync everything else. Features that the unit comes out with is removed when they sync it to your bike, if you don't have those features installed on your bike.

What this means: if you have an 05 GS, and your speedo gives you issues (the most common fault, it seems), and you have to replace it with a new unit, your miles will reset to 0 km. Nothing BMW can do about it.

What you can do: you can source a combi unit with less km on than yours, but from the same model, and then BMW can sync it up.
