Just spending a couple of hours setting up your suspension can turn a bike from a unwieldy dog into a ubber handler. Chuck in tyre pressure and handle bar position and without spending a cent it is possible to transform your ride.

Compared 21 and 19 inch wheels for 1200 GS- side to side there is a significant difference. Bear in mind that the larger wheel raises the front axle and thereby changes the rake angle aswell. I dont think there is any question that the larger wheel on the same bike makes for a better offroad ride. Having said that its not of life altering proportions! But then neither are many of the other things we do to our bikes eg removing catalyst, 2 finger levers, wider and pivot footpegs etc etc not that it has ever stopped me from doing all of the above!

Indeed! Also the GS and GSA have slightly different rake angles - the GSA is steeper, not sure how much by tho, but I would think that the 21" conversion would probably bring it back into the same angle as a standard GS. the mod is pricey tho - between R15K & R25K depending on the parts used....

My personal opinion is that one should first start off with small wheels. Say 14 inch. Then you slowly work your way up to 16, 17, 18 and 19 inch wheels.

Only then may you graduate to 21 inch wheels.

I must be very, very experienced - XL has 23" front wheel! :imaposer:

I salute you, you brave dirt God! 21 inch my ass, pffft!

My MTB is 29" front and rear.....  And it goes so well in the dirt it does not even need an engine....

:imaposer: I was waiting for that post.. The 29er 25er debate has now caused the manufacturers to release a 27.5.. Maybe BMW should release a 20" :pot:

So they have conceded that 26'ers are crap after all and do not even debate it anymore?

MotoGP bikes are 16.5 at the front, need extreme cornering for them to "wash out" in a corner.

My 1200GS has a 19" front wheel, whereas my R80 G/S has a 21".
I comfortably ride both off-road, but the 1200GS is the better of the two on tar.
I tour tar + dirt on my 1200 as it is the better tool for the task.
