Going for my licence on friday
« on: October 30, 2007, 10:23:52 am »
Called the call centre 2 months ago and they put me on the waiting list. I was supposed to receive an sms in 10 days but it arrived this morning. So friday at 12 it's me, but I think it means I won't be able to attend a training day like the bmw one.

Is it necessary, I'm on a TW200, which is easy enough to ride, and I think I know what I'm doing, but I'd like to practice the test before I get there any ideas?

BTW Shark and Uncle, you guys did the test earlier this month but we've had no feedback as to how it went. Hopefully no news is good news!

Also is it still the same as this: http://www.flamesonmytank.co.za/license.htm

My advice, just use that description on the site. Basics are observe before pull off, the whole 360 one.
And when ever you do something, the same 360. Also make sure you do a blind spot check when you turn.
That site explains the most complicated ones properly. (changing lanes, in town)

Also keep your speed low, just over 25kph is all thats needed. I was accelerating to over 40 for the tests. Made them harder.

Also find a list for the pre ride checks, the off the bike and the on the bike.
Pretty simple, I just rattled on till the guy got bored.

You'll do it easy.

...I was accelerating to over 40 for the tests...
So, did you pass?
The three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40 and a hammer.  If it moves and it shouldn't, use the duct tape.  If it doesn't move and it should, use the WD-40.  Otherwise use the hammer.

Sure they will, just confirmed via satellite reconnaissance (read google earth) that Midrand also has the bike testing layout.
Can go there as well.

More importantly why are you going for the test. How boring is it going to be to ride without that tension.

Just some common sense:
When you go for the test, try to wear protective clothes, and avoid any hooligan inspiring stuff like these hair that you stick on the helmet.
It's a very good thing that you do the test on the TW, some testers hate okes that come to do the test on a GSX-R 1000.

The idea is to make the impression that you are a very conscious, safe, and a responsible rider.

Be weary of those okes in pacaltsdorp. They flunked me for touching a yellow line ...they said it was indicating a curb ...I did not even know that the test had started ...thought I was just parking the truck before the inspection  ..when I asked if I could redo the test there and then he said sorry, hes got some time on his hand now and need to do some shopping!

I'm not going to those crooks. I'm going to Mosselbay ;D

I'll be in Darfur next month, I think I'm over my quota of tension thanks

I'm also going for my licence on Friday in Roodepoort.  I did the BMW K53 preparation this afternoon.
1.) Always look to the right and the left before taking off.
2.) Make sure you're in first when you stop and only put down your left foot.  Look again left and right before you put your other foot down, if you have to.
3.) Make sure you know what is expected from you before you start.
4.) If you have to get the bike into the correct position don't try and ride it, rather use both feet on the ground and crawl in first to manoeuvre.
5.) Remember to look before turning and using indicators
6.) The guy at BMW said that you don't have to include any fluid levels in the bike check.
7.) For some test you must gear up and down again, 1st, 2nd and back to 1st to stop. All in quick succession.

Technically its not that difficult.  Don't rush and stay calm.  Be the friendliest guy around and DONT strip your moer.  Smile always!
Speed for emergency brake is 25-28km/h.  I stopped about a meter short of the actual spot without trying to hard.

It's a good thing I had my brakes done yesterday!

Good luck guys.

I lost a point for not using the choke and not checking the fuel tap. Damn man, some bikes don't even have those taps. I know you don't have to use it, but at least mention it, then they won't take off points.

And the advice given about just trying to be the nicest and safest guy on the road, I did just that and I think it's good advice.
I passed the test, and I'd only been biking for six months, and only two of those had been on anything bigger than a 125, and I did it on a KLR650, so I'm pretty sure you people will do fine.
And again, good luck!
