Can somebody please tell me at what revs the 690 motor is running when
cruising in top gear at around 120 km/h ?
I Still want to do a side by test against a 990 and 1200
acceleration run from 120 to 160.
I think the 690 will smoke them both,
We did that test with my ex super enduro and a friends 690. The SE won, but surprisingly not by a lot. That day the 690 impressed me a lot..
Pre 2012 690?

No, it was a 2013 model.
Trust that little voice in your head that says 'Wouldn't it be interesting if...'; And then do it.

That's impressive :o

So I guess from stand still or even a running start the 690 will also be close to the 950 SE due to its weight?

If it accelerates like that then I suppose it would even be easier to get the front up on the 690 compared to the SE?

the front wheel is so light,  it comes up on it's own while parked in the garage WITHOUT keys in the ignition.

Now you know why I use tie downs on the bike in the garage at night!   :imaposer:

Also starting to think about a 690.

I want long range tanks but not the full kit or Oryx. What can you guys recommend? What is the range then?

safari tank is 14l and RR tanks are 9 - will then give you range between  450 / 400 km

That's what I was looking for thanks. Don't like the big single tank

It's worth it... like all motorcycles are

I would like to see a 690 stay anywhere near my SE on a tar or gravel road; maybe on technical dirt.

I've dragged raced against a friend on tar.  He was on a F800GS.  He had Anakees on, I was on knobs.  In every gear he pulled 1 bike length away from me.  When we hit 4th, he had 4 lengths on me.  I actually thought that was OK, the 690 has a low rev limit and wheelies a bit to easy.

On dirt, my KTM 250 SX-F totally destroys my 690 during roll-on runs. Lack of traction and the fact that the 250 revs to 13000 rpm vs the 690's 7800 seems to be the main issues here.

Do that same drag on the dirt and you'd pull a number of bike lenghts away but the time you get into second ...  ;D
Running is hard. It always has been. Woolly mammoths didn’t just roll over onto a plate and serve themselves up to prehistoric man with fries and a shake. They had to be caught - and running down woolly mammoths was hard.

I think it might be tighter than you'd expect.  The F800GS has a monster wheelbase, making for good traction (obviously on similar tyres).   I have an F800 as well, the challenge would be to find a friend I'd trust on 1 of my bikes :snorting:  Of course, the 800 might just be the most boring bike I've ever owned.

I must agree with you Bill. I felt so comfortable and confident on my 800 that I had no issues taking it into places that I know it should not go. But it is a boring bike.

Does anyone know what the life expectancy of the 690 engine is in terms of KM's?

Ride it like a girl and you may get some sort of life expectancy, but otherwise budget for a rebuild at 25,000 - 30,000 kms.

You're kidding right? Please back up silly claims like that with some facts. I rode the shit out of my 640 and sold it with 45k km and it was running perfectly

I sold mine with 35000 km . No problems

You sold it and bought another one with less mileage on it; didn't you?

Everybody talks about the ktm 690 having a to high performance motor which compromises the longevity of the engine. What about the the honda xr650r which pushes out 44kw out of a 650 carburated engine. The 44kw is only a few shy of the ktm's power output. And apart from the injection change its still the same LC4 engine that was used in the 640 adventure. I have no worries this engine will do its part. (i hope  )

It is a completely different engine to the one that was in the 640 adventure. The 640 engine was/is a complete dog of a thing  :pot:

Ok am I missing something here? The bike is a 2010 model(I phoned the owner) . they go for around 72 000 without the dakar kit. the omega kit is 25k. the rally raid around 30k.

So if I bought a 2010 model for 70 odd and bought and added my own Dakar kit it comes to the same price.

I'm not sure i see the value in buying a 690 with the 2nd hand Dakar kit on already if I can look for a clean non Dakar kitted bike and then go and buy a brand new kit for same price.

I have looked around and the guys seem to want full price for the dakar kit.

Let me know if I'm missing something obvious here.

Thanks

Ideally, and there is no pressure here, but.... the 2012/2013 models are the ones to go for:
 - 690 cc vs 650 cc
 - a few more KW and NM
 - significantly improved headlight
 - shorter suspension travel
 - new spring rates that are softer and more street compliant
 - improved seat

Take a 2013 demo for a spin :ricky:
Honda XR250  Husqvarna TE630  Husqvarna SM630  KTM 690
