But yes I agree. A good 610 or even XR650R is pretty dam close to a 690 and for a whole lot less cash (purchase & servicing).

Make no mistake the 610 is not perfect and also has its issues. But the point is for half the money of a 690 it is nowhere near half the bike.
I can't comment on the XR as I have never owned one.

Just got my 2014 690. Wanna do RR evo 1 screen and tanks, Wild dog soft pannier racks, KTM bash plate, and Renazco or Touratech seat. (Dunno if Evo1 screen can be combined with Evo2 tanks as I want the clear screen offered only on Evo1 kits? - Any ideas?) └lready discovered that Akrapovic pipe doesn't fit 2014 model.

Rough Rider don't you think the 690 is a lot better on the road , and unfortunately to get to the cool places often means a long crappy tar bit. The 2012 and on with the 690cc has that little more power and the ratios are better handled.

Mine was the first generation 690; I have not ridden one of the new ones, so I can't really say how they go.

My 690 had very jerky throttle response and the engine was very peaky for a big bore thumper. It was more powerful at the top end than the 610 but had a hard time, believe it or not, keeping up with a BMW 650GS on the open road for any length of time.

the 2014 690  has ride by wire throttle and duel ignition it is going to be so smooth  ;D (plus ABS as well  ;))

Don't bother with a Touratech seat. Not worth the money at all. Mine is only marginally (and I mean really marginally) more comfortable than my original seat.
Don't know about the Renazco though.

I've dragged raced against a friend on tar.  He was on a F800GS.  He had Anakees on, I was on knobs.  In every gear he pulled 1 bike length away from me.  When we hit 4th, he had 4 lengths on me.  I actually thought that was OK, the 690 has a low rev limit and wheelies a bit to easy.

On dirt, my KTM 250 SX-F totally destroys my 690 during roll-on runs. Lack of traction and the fact that the 250 revs to 13000 rpm vs the 690's 7800 seems to be the main issues here.

What is the lifespan of these engines? Will it do 100 000 km before it needs to be redone?

Recently had the PLEASURE of spending some time riding a 2014 690. Loved it. Enjoyed the handling, at no time did I think that a steering damper was necessary, not like the previous models I rode. Wind protection is a must, sitting at 130km/h for long periods of time is uncomfortable. Loved the suspension, even thou the bike was not set up for me, I really enjoyed the way the bike held it's line through corners and smoothed out the corrugations. What I did find is that it did not require much rider input, was very relaxing and untiring to ride at pace.

Definitely high on my list for the next bike, when I decide to buy again.

Bought one a couple of months ago (also used to own a 2010 model).

The 2014 with the fly by wire throttle and the duel sparkplugs are a lot more "mature" than the previous models, (although it has more ponies) it is smoother and easier to ride and less vibey.  Still huge amounts of fun although it has lost some of the "manic-ness" of the previous model.

the suspension (although I am still of the opinion that KTM has down graded this from the previous model - it is more like the 1190 suspension now - damping one fork and rebound other fork) are surprisingly good and tracks well. The front, out of the box, is quite firm but that is how I like it.  I still would have preferred more traditional type front forks though and a little more travel.

I did fit the Scotts steering damper (but rode it for a while without).  The front end is better than the previous models - not quite as skittish - but I like the scotts steering damper even if it is just for the piece of mind of the High speed damping function.

Is it worth it....  Yes....  every sent  :thumleft:

Ja Thanks Toors....it's your fault that I have this itch for a 690. That little spin on your bike got me thinking. Then I had a much longer spin on another 2014 690  and the bug has bit big time. But it will have to wait, starting a new business next month so I need to get that fully up and running before I can even think about buying.

Would love to spend the day in De Wildt on one but I really don't think a dealership would give me one to test like that.   :lol8:
