It started innocently enough... I got a '76 Honda CB550F to have something besides house renovations to tinker on.  It ran OK but needed a fair bit of cosmetic work and was smoking a little and leaking oil. I had a fender bender (read the blog) and decided to upgrade the brakes, but then with moving house, things were put on hold for ~8months.

Recently, I got hold of a parts bike that's nearly complete ('77 CB550K). Original 4-into-4 exhausts plus the possibility of getting it running, only R3500... I couldn't say no.

And then, the plastic maggot sort of landed in my lap, so suddenly there are 3 project bikes vying for my attention. More than enough tinkering available!

I started a blog about the build process of the first 550, but then the plastic maggot got its own thread here. I'm waiting for a gasket kit to arrive so I started work on the 550 again - might as well start a thread. Seeing as I've just rebuilt the carbs on the CX, I thought I'd tackle this:

The parts I chucked in the ultrsonic cleaner, minus the floats & the cut-off. I was running the water quite hot so dodn't want to damage anything. The o-rings are rock hard - will have to replace. In fact, I don't even know how I'm going to get them off!

Sodablasted the bodies. Going to polish the bowls and the top covers

This is as far as I got. Apparently my polisher is too loud to run at 10pm on a Sunday night  :-\

Still have some polishing to do, and I'll put the bodies through the u/sonic in clear hot water to make sure I dissolve any remaining soda. Then to find o-rings somewhere, and hope the bowl seals don't leak...
