What exactly is malle moto?

Bike entrants to the Dakar have three categories to choose:

Super Production - Able to change the engine and other key parts of the bike anytime (but not the bike itself of course!) at anytime, but an engine change comes with time penalties. The factory teams always race in this class.

Production - Also called "marathon"; all major components (engine, forks, triple clamps, header, swing arm) must last the duration of the rally. The top end is allowed to be opened but that is it. If your engine needs replacing (and you have made it to the bivouac on your own steam) you're still out of the rally unless you move over to super production class. The idea being the marathon class is that you test the machine against the rally as well

Malle moto is Man and machine versus the rally, and this is how the Dakar started. Each rider had only two crates with everything they needed in them for the duration of the rally. These boxes are shipped alternately to every second bivouac by the organisation (like is going to happen in the Amageza). The riders are not allowed any outside assistance anywhere. This differs form the other class where they are allowed assistance in the bivouacs, so they can bring support teams and mechanics. The malle moto guys maintain their machines themselves at the end of each day, make their own tents and everything. This is very difficult to do in the Dakar and still finish, typically less than 50% finish and 80% of the people enter 1st time into the Dakar in this class do not finish. Not so for Brett!!

VERY VERY sad news this morning.............

Curt Casseli has died in a crash in the Baja1000.........

http://www.elvigia.net/deportes/2013/11/15/fallece-kurt-caselli-baja-1000-141377.html

Translated from Spanish via Google Translate:

Ensenada, BC -  The Californian rider Kurt Caselli died this afternoon during the 46th SCORE Baja 1000, this after suffering a head impact when was stalking the race leader, Colton Udal.
Caselli, 30 years old, was part of the team with his fellow KTM, Elena Santos Junior, Kendall Norman and Mike Brown, participated in Class 22 motorcycle aboard 2x.
Precisely the American had started on Thursday ahead within the competition, this after winning the first qualification of motorcycles in the history of SCORE International and Lows, in what is a story that fills in mourning the Off-Road or off-road .
This year, Kurt debuted at Dakar Rally as a replacement Spanish Marc Coma after injuring the latter and managed to win several stages, ending at position 31 in general.
Currently Caselli was second in the championship of the 22 and was a favorite to win the 1000 miles, after finishing second in the Baja 500 and San Felipe 250.

Very sad indeed..........

RIP......

Kurt Casseli "testing" the suspension of the new new 450RR in Morrocco a few weeks ago.

Man, I'm absolutely stunned.... This is very tragic news.  :'(  :'(  :'(

Condolences to his family and friends. He was one of the fastest guys on the planet, and fearless. It just highlights again how dangerous Baja and rally racing really is.

Really really gutted.  :'( :'(

Great shot! The big white spot is the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt pan on earth in Bolivia. (280*180km) Rumor is they will be crossing that although it will be under about 30cm of water that time of the year probably.  I can see our mine on there too!
