"Wooden" helmet... would you wear one?
« on: November 04, 2007, 07:49:01 pm »
Roof is pleased to announce the new very attractive Bamboo helmet made from real Bamboo!!

This very attractive semi jet combines naturally original features, resistance and reliability of its components to a trendy look.

Bamboo is one of the strongest building materials and its tensile strength is 28,000 per square inch versus 23,000 for steel.

Only - £189.99!  ;D

In fact these don't look too bad at all.... check: http://www.hgbmotorcycles.co.uk/index.html?lang=en-uk&target=d8.html

Ah! A "Barnes Wallis" helmet. Good design philosophy. This helmet is designed after the principle of its inventor "Barnes Wallis", that is the use of the geodetic principle. First used on an Airship called the R100 and then later on bombers.

For those intrested, check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnes_Wallis

Question : Would I use it?
Answere : Hell No..... well, maybe, if they had used 'spruce'  :-\

A wooden lid cood be quite light. Wood like to see it though. Remember that it is not all wood, but rather wood reinforced plastics, since the glue used will probably be a polimer based product.

Tensile strength is by how much force it can be pulled till it breaks. Fibre glass... or glass reinforced plastics might well be a lot more brittle than a wood reinforced plastic. Tensile strength will prevent it from tearing, but not from denting in upon impact. So, yeah, it is somewhat important, but not all that relevant as a measure.

I am not so sure that I wood wearit tho.

I fink under test, this helmet could give surprising results:  8) 8) 8)

Remember, carbon fibre, glass fibre et al, only have strength in tension, weak as hell any other direction, so all the fancy composites are not really in there correct environment?

Bamboo however I would say has a better blend of properties, tensile, compressive shear and impact, my only question is "what polymers are they stickin it togethher with"?

I'd wear it, and in that same style. I am looking for a "pisspot" for my scooter.
