A quick review - from the start of my biking days until today...

1980 My first, a written off Suzuki TS 125 that I bought for R90 (had to borrow R50 from by big boet!) and fixed up. We rode every weekend in the old Kwa Zulu homelands between Amanzimtoti and Umbumbulu. Next to me is (was) my brother's new 200R.

Next came my enduro racing years - saved all my army money and bought a brand new Yamaha IT 200 in March 1984 for R2407
I raced WFO, Zululand Enduro series and South Coast Hare Scrambles, all on an apprentice salary!
Next two pics at Kataza (near Melmoth) Zululand race...their fire breaks were legend!

Looking tired...to come between 8th and 12th in the A division (WFO or Zululand Champs) you were looking at about six hours, to do about 140 km. Usually when I got in guys like Alfie Cox, Richard Manning, Tommy Trefs, even Rodney Grey on occasion when he wasn't track racing, had already loaded their bikes, showered and on their second beer looking fresh :)  Good times.

My dad looking on while I make my way up another "cliff face" in a WFO event inland from Scottburgh

Then the career, marriage and kids came along and many years passed. Always had a bike of some sort (XT600 Tenere, TDM850, KDX250, Banshee 350) but no photos :'(
I then bought a new KTM 950S in May 2005 (after my divorce). Toured for 50 000 km on that, great bike!

Somewhere between Kosi Bay and Sodwana...

In Lesotho (near Malealea)

Then in January 2010 I bought a new 990R...as at now 37 000 km (I don't commute, just trips)

A storm over the Free State...

On the Zambezi Gorge road (Zim) towards Mlibizi...

...and that's me, thanks for reading!!

Wayne do you remember Skiff Wainwright from the WFO Zululand racing days. Thanks for the photos from that time, brings back good memories. I never raced but was there helping with the start/finish lap timing etc. My sister (Sonja Wainwright) did all the lap timing and scoring.

Oh boy, my fading memory! But yes, I definitely do recall those names Mark. It sure is a small world  :thumleft: Are they still in that area? I'm sure that they will recall the Duck brothers  ;D
Yes, in the seventies and early eighties the Natal WFO events were known as "bike breakers" and as a result the entries were getting smaller and smaller. Many guys started travelling to the Zululand events as they, generally, were "easier"...I use the word very reluctantly because some, like Kataza, would be notoriously difficult  :eek7:

Then the Natal WFO guys had to get their entries up so decided on a rule for their events (something like this): "A reasonably proficient rider should be able to get his bike around the course unaided"   ;D

Before this change it was fairly common to have to wait at a difficult (read impossible to ride) point (dongas, mud holes and rivers) for other riders to catch up so that four or so of you together could carry the bikes through. I'm not talking about the top 5 champions here, just us midfield morons (there were only about 25 to 30 in the field in those days)!

Funny how the wheel turns...now we see the move to "extreme" events, the new Roof, Romaniacs, etc. We did them back then, we just did not have a name for it!   ;)

Wayne.
