My "Bucket List" trip to Cape Town
« on: February 12, 2013, 07:44:20 pm »
Last year, I decided that it was time to take the bike for a longer ride. I returned to riding a couple of years ago, after many years off the bike. So, as the plan was to visit family in Cape Town over December, I would ride the bike and my wife and kids would fly down, to arrive the same day I did. I had never done a long trip on the bike (longer than about 400 - 500km). I know many on this forum have done this trip many times, it was a first for me. This report will be “ho-hum” ....yawn, for many, but for the uninitiated, I hope you get something out of it!
I thought I would share some pics from the trip, even though it was all tar. To those that have never done it, it is worth doing, even just once. The Karoo, on a bike, is really an experience.
Oh...and we were Blessed with no rain and almost Zero wind, for the entire trip! (But SHEEEESH...Oudtshoorn gets hot!)

Day 1: Springs via Vereeniging, Koppies, Kroonstad, Bloem, Tromsburg, through to Colesburg. Sleep over at The Barracks.

Day 2: Colesburg via Beaufort West, Meiringspoort, De Rust to Oudtshoorn. Slept over at NA Smit Resort.

Day 3: Oudtshoorn, down the R62 to Durbanville

Pics to follow

Day 1:
First fuel stop at Kroonstad. Got over the nerves and started to relax by now
KTM is being ridden by my mate who decided to ride with me to Oudtshoorn and then off to Knysna. My brother was to ride up from Cape Town and meet me in Oudtshoorn and then ride back the next day.

Stop to see the other Voortrekker Monument in Winberg, only to find it all locked up. Took a pic and left.

Bloem lunch and fuel stop

Later stopped in Trompsburg and a very cool coffee shop that served home made pies, cakes and pastries.

Then on to Colesburg, only for the KTM to have a puncture in the front tyre/tube...thank goodness, right at the garage 5km from town!

Got to The Barracks with daylight to spare...great place. Good Karoo Lamb, beer and lodgings.

End of Day 1....Safe and Sound

Day Two  -Colesburg to Oudtshoorn

Loading bikes

Snacks and fuel in Beaufort West....with every other holiday maker going anywhere!

Then it was on, into the Karoo...

Meiringspoort....I was in awe! Should have stopped for more pics, but to many holidaymakers

Safely in Oudtshoorn and the resort swimming pool!

Seems like December was the perfect time for touring to the Mother city.
Hitman and I embarked on just such a tour... from Uitenhage. Have to agree, the Karoo is perfect biking territory.
Blessed are the cracked for they are
the ones who let in the light!
