2013 is a very special year for the DJ run, actually this year it is called the JD Run. We celebrate the 100 year anniversary of this event  :thumleft:

In 1913, some biker decided to race his motorcycle from Durban to Johannesburg, a couple of other guys joined him and so this event grew every year until 1936. This is when the last event was held and duly stopped by the authorities as i was becoming too dangerous as this was a race held on public roads.

In 1970, another biking enthusiast decided it would be a great idea to restore this event but do it in the form of a regularity trail. The catch was that you needed to have a bike that would have qualified to take part in the event in its original form. Therefore the motorcycle needed to be built before 31 December 1936.

The 1913 event was actually run from JHB to DBN and every year thereafter the event was run from DBN to JHB.
The 100th anniversary ride this year will follow the 1913 format. It will be a 3 day event on 7, 8 ad 9 Mach 2013.
The start is at Carnival City and the event has attracted a record field of 200 motorbikes (all pre 1937)

The event typically follows the old JHB to DBN route going via Hiedelberg, Balfour, Standerton, Volksrust, Newcastle, Ladysmith, Escourt, Mooi River, Pietermaritzburg, Hillcrest.

The plan for this year (obviously the exact route is not available  >:D)
Day one 7 March:
Carnival City to Newcastle - First bike leaves at 6.01am and the last bike at 9.21am

Day 2 8 March:
Newcastle to Nottingham Road - First bike leaves at 6.01am from Mortimer Garage

Day 3 9 March:
Nottingham Road to Hillcrest - First bike leave at 6.01am from Notties Hotel

Mass ride to Durban Saturday 9 March
After the final control in Hillcrest, all the bikes will embark on a mass ride from Hillcrest to Durban City Hall The ride will commence at 2.30pm
We will be met by the Mayor of Durban at the City Hall

So for those that are interested in having a look at the bikes, here are some times and places to see them and talk to the legends that ride them  :imaposer: :imaposer:
