The end of an Era

ON Sunday Andy and I took a 561km ride to Elandsvlei deep in the Tankwa Karoo.
I was interested to meet the new owners as the Postal route passes through their front garden and
across their farm.
Sad to say the beautiful farm previously owned by Kobus and Tilla Hough is now fast deteriorating
and their once proud farmhouse dating back to Kobus's parents is now really run down.
Kobus was born in the house more than 70 years ago, grew up on the farm, took over from his dad
and married Tilla a schoolteacher who started the Elandsvlei school for local children.
We once attended Kobus 60th birthday on the farm and the entire gathering drove into a deep valley
close to Kobus se Gat and indulged on lamb on the spit and many loaves of great potbrood all baked
by Tilla on site.
How we all got back to the farmhouse after dark and many glasses of the finest is anyone's guess.
Now, many years back Kobus decided to sell as he has no sons and his daughters and their husbands
are not farmers.
And subsequently he sold but stayed on as farm manager and to help the new owners who wanted to
organic farm.
But, sad to say the farm has that real run down look to it and one can only hope something is done
before the rot really sets in.
Already valuable diesel engines and pipes have been stripped out of the generator room and I am
sure more has disappeared.
Plus the farm had a devastating fire which burnt down the guest house and caused plenty of
damage.
Fortunately the Elandsvlei school appears to be running and hopefully many farm children will get
their basic schooling.
Leaving the farm behind us we rode to Stonehenge and after negotiating several deep sand stretches
were surprised to be welcomed by Henk.
Cool beers and drinks and a good lunch plus meeting with several Afrika Burn people we left and
headed for home and on route Tankwa Padstal.
Sitting on the stoep of Tankwa Padstal with Hein, Susan and all the visitors one finds it hard to kit
up and ride away from such a tranquil place.
In Ceres we filled up rather thirsty bikes after covering more than 350km and headed for home.
Thanks to Andy who is always great company we had yet another fantastic day in the Karoo.
