Any DR650 riders in Port Elizabeth?
« on: April 08, 2013, 04:01:45 pm »
Hi All

Do any of the PE dogs ride a DR650?  If possible i am looking to arrange a test ride.  Currently trying to make my mind up on the thumper side of things and have always liked the DR650 specs wise etc but havent gotten the chance to ride one yet.  Have owned a KLR but am looking for something lighter like a DR and less bits to break off-road.

If anyone can assist please let me know.

Cheers
Ettienne

DR riders are cacher and Duks.
If you liked the KLR you will probably love a DR.

Thanks Crab!

Will PM them.  I really did enjoy the KLR just the weight and having to protect the radiator and the large amount of plastic on the new gen put me off in the bush.  That being said, my friend who i swopped it with for my Jeep dumped it a few times in some places it probably didnt belong and nothing broke as i had fitted the SW-Motech bash plate and crash bars.

Now I am looking at selling the Jeep and getting the DR to compliment my 650 Vstrom for more of my preferable off road riding.  Ground clearance will be nice to have again.

hey 10Klr
have had my DR since 2009.
very strong bikes,  which fall very well.
although i had bad luck (motor blew),  they are generally regarded as extremely reliable.
i had a KLR before the DR,  and had similar concerns,  which is why i sold and went with the DR.
it was so much more that the KLR could dream of being...

Hi Ganjora

Thanks for the feedback!  Sounds exactly what i am looking for.  Chatted to the fiance and have decided we wont really use the Jeep anymore so it will be for sale soon.  Then i will decide whether or not to buy a low km second hand or new.   Always wanted a new bike and this is about the best way to get one.  Happy almpst 30 to me

difficult to find them for sale 2nd hand.
i would buy new.
with minimal cash spent on farkles,  you will have a tough as nails one man adventure machine.
no need to go mad,  like i did,  and blow a fortune on the bike.
you will need: front progressive springs,  handguards,  and a bashplate.
everything else is optional...

Thats the answer i was looking for.  That and a bigger gas tank would be great.  Im hoping Suzuki have some black or whites left over.  Acerbis and IMS dont have Grey tanks available yet.  I know there is always the natural colour but i like a colour coded bike.  So used to using the trip meter for a fuel gauge.

Left over bikes should be cheaper.  As far as I'm aware only change for 2012 bikes is upgraded NSU screws.  Either way i would check it for peace of mind.

There have been a couple of DR's for sale on the forum recently with 30 to 40 000km. And a few were auctioned in PE recently ex some banks security or software maintenance department.
I think Swanniebraai had two.

Thanks Crab

I know of Swannies I just want to keep the mileage as low as possible if buying second hand.  sub 15k km if possible.  Also i understand the financial loss of buying a new bike but a big part of me still wants to.  Unless I find a great second hand bike I will buy new when the time is right.

Having owned a stock KLR could it be worse than that?  I did do springs and the KLR and im sure i would do them on the DR because most bike testers dont weigh 95kgs  ::)

Hi 10klr
I see you have a screen on your DR.
If you later on decide to get something more good-looking and sturdy, let me know as I can organise you a screen of a different type, see the photos.
Cheers

Hi Herms
I'll send you a pm, but check in the mean time the DR650 thread (http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=25050.2400) for some more info and background: page 107 from the middle of the page and page 108.

Hi Eikeboom

Thanks for the offer.  I actually prefer riding without a screen so have taken it off.  For the long trips I will just use the one i have but yours looks good!
