Swambo's bent on international travel, which is great, but expensive and can't be done often. I need to convince her that ZA is the amazing place that it is.

We've got two weeks in November and maybe R5~7k each. There's a car we can borrow in Stellenbosch, so we're thinking the Overberg area, although we're more mountain & river people than beach people. A mixture would be good.

Any recommendations of where to go? Anyone with lekker accommodation?
This is step 1 to convincing her that missioning around ZA on a bike is a good idea; help me out here!  :bueller:

Second that. You can also look into staying a night or 2 at the Guano Caves in a tent house - Montagu area. Affordable and very nice.

Swambo's bent on international travel,

If that is the case I doubt she will be satisfied with camping or seeing scenic things.

What is she looking for? Europe city travel? Island holiday?

She enjoys good scenery but doesn't dig camping.

For international travel it's the history and culture that she's after. Island getaway doesn't appeal.

This particular holiday is more of just a switch-off. We just want to be calm & quiet for a bit.

For international travel it's the history and culture that she's after.

That can be matched in SA. Eg interesting west coast or Karoo towns.

Bike trip, staying in b&b but you'll have to study what cultural and historic things there is to see and do.
Knowing more about a place rather than just driving through does make a difference to the experience thereof.

Give her International travel. That does not mean putting her on a plane and flying her off somewhere, it means putting her on the back of your bike and going to Swaziland.
Swaziland is 3 hours from Johburg, ok 4 hours if you stop for coffee. Border posts are 15 minutes a side, and you don't have to do the tent thing, accommodation, provided you do a bit of homework, can be very reasonable.
Lesotho is just as far, but you need a bit of off - road riding skills for that one and I don't know what your skill levels are.
Namibia is awesome, easy borders etc, but it's a bit further afield and the roads there have these sandy driffies that you have to watch out for.
But the best part is if you stay in South Africa. Gamkaskloof. Karoo. Richtersveld. North Coast. South Coast. Cape coast. Eastern Frystaat. Fark do I need to go on? Putsonderwater, Verneukspan, Geluksburg.
You don't need that airplane ticket.

Oops, I forgot to mention something.
Start her off on the ride report section of this forum. Then take her to the 'photos that want to make you ride' thread, and the rest of the 'About South Africa section'. If that doesn't work, I'm afraid you'll have to go for the airplane ticket to Ebiza, cause then nothing is going to work.

We've just done an amazing 10-day trip through the Western Cape and southern tip of the Northern Cape.

Decided to do "off-the-beaten-track"  travelling and stay in places we normally either drove through - or avoided....

Cape Town - Citrusdal (2 nights at The Baths Hot springs to relax), then drove to Algeria (the Charade ould not get to The Oasis) and decided to visit Lambertsbay. Travelled on dirt to Doringbaai where we stayed & Strandfontein (amazingly stunning - a hidden gem) and then headed to Van Rhynsdorp. Loeriesfontein was next and then we headed down to Calvina (stayed at Blue Nartjie) .... Williston, Carnavon, Luxton, Victoria West, Beaufort West, Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Montague........... mmmmm TOO NICE!!!!

Depends on where and what type of holiday you want..........  we did around 2800km - fuel used averaged 21km/l (very economical) and instead of rushing from place to place... we just took in the scenery and had a really great time!

SA is too big to see entirely in your lifetime (unless you don't have to work and can travel all the time) .............. living in the UK - it's flippen expensive. Europe - well it's a bit better but you better get ready for laying out at least R60k each (remember return flights will rip a moerse hole in your budget) - South America & USA - can be affordable - but you also need tom!

We have fallen in love with SA all over again..............   try it.... you'll like it!   :thumleft:
