A dusty turn around Vanwyksdorp and back
« on: May 01, 2013, 09:05:17 pm »
We were undecided till a day before the time  about where to to go, either Cederberg or Vanwyksdorp which won the toss. Left somerset at about 10 travelling over Villiersdorp through the back road to Robertson. Beautifull dusty roads under a increasing cloud cover sighting a speedy tortoise crossing the road. The skies opened up towards Montague where we had a nibble and fuel up, check out the pumkins outside dried fruit shop, sampled some good jeripico at the wine shop as well. Montague as always a pretty little town.

Pushing on on the dirt highway towards Anysberg/Plathuis we ran into nice warm 33deg  temp and as we stopped a few times for a water break had to start pushing a bit to get to Vanwyksdorp before they pack up the little town. Where the Plathuis turn off joins R62 we found these zebra's, damm horny bugger after the missus scratched his head he promtly turned around and kicked her a shot, just touching and a nice bruise saved by the fence, wanted plant him with a helmet but behaved. Running in there at 5ish for anything cold we were treated to a show of "outside a platteland off sales on any saturday afternoon". Absolutely hillarious and after a half hour and a Black Lable or 2 we headed off to the farm about 3 kays out of the town

Found the farmhouse a top notch spot and after a good couple of milkshakes and a braai we were staring into that big sky and listening to karoo silence, beautifull. We also experienced nice in house entertainment with huge ghecko chomping months. Next morning we went walk about and saw springbok, giraffe but to distant for a pic. The Nguni cows came up close and a toktokkie kapping it out before a breakfast made for a good start. We left at about 10 return trip via Gysemanshoek pass but having to take it easy as BM is now on outer limit of fuel range although Spannermans fuel bowser XT was there for back up

Travelling back to the Garcia pass road we passed plenty koedoes and other game but as its a bit dusty we saved the camera as we left late ish as well. Good quality roads and green by karoo standards. Stopped at the Gysemans turn off and found a little ox wagon sign on fence line (any one knows what that's about) The road up to Gysemans was in top condition being graded a shortwhile back but there was now a bunch of gates to open and close, no problem but short legs and loose stones and loaded BM made for interesting pull offs. Unfortunately not enough pics but the camera wont do the justice, its a beauty. Other side the pass we took the fork to the right (previous time to left spat us out on N2 after some nice forest roads) The right turn was even a better road and after miles of farm roads we came out in Heidelberg

After a early lite lunch we went back through Heidelberg and onto the Barrydale/Suurbraak road through miles and miles of dairy farms we came out at N2 suurbraak. The plan was to turn off to Greyton otherside Riviersonderend and after  the compulsory Pie stop found the XT decided otherwise by offering us with a flat rear. We could not choose a better spot, in front of pie shop with bathrooms and in the shade with the Shell just 50m up the road. Probably 40min later with new tube fitted we were on our way but because of time lost stuck to the N2 with all its traffic. A nice fresh headwind blowing from CT side kept us awake and we ran into CT around 5.30. About  700 odd kays with good people and enjoying this place of ours. Oh the Bm  can do over 300ks on the tank if you travel more at 80 than 100 and some

Thanks for a nice RR. What was the name of the farm you stayed at near van Wyksdorp?
