If you aren't going to be "pushing" the limits of grip and trying to shave seconds of your laptimes then you can't go wrong with something like a KDX or a CRF, especially if you're new to the game, those bike won't make you end up in trouble, and also won't kill your endurance as you aren't holding on for dear life the whole time. Also look at KTM 200, they can be had for good prices 2nd hand and are a LOT more refined than the above mentioned.

How much do you weight and what do you want to do with the bike?

I have owned a KDX 200 and KTM 200. The KDX is a great play bike and probably all you need if you are never going to race or are not the super competitive type. That said, the step up in suspension, motor and handling to something like a KTM 200 is significant. I am about 80kg and the bike did not lack any power, was awesome in the tight stuff and could be maneuvered/man-handled easily with its mountain bike weight when the going got really tough or you got stuck. All I missed was an e-start - which you get with the new KTM 200 - but to be honest it kick-starts very easily even halfway up a slope. The 200 does require you to be in the right gear and an involved riding style - if you are the lazy type, a bigger motor might make things easier (apparently a reason many people like the KTM 300).

Your weight will also impact on what bike might fit you better as well as what you want to do with it (enduro - 2t / off-road open stuff - 4t rule of thumb)

But on a serious note; where do you want to ride?
If it is the sand like most of us in Cape Town then I would stay away from the KTM 200 and any of the 250f bikes (although the MX ones are now making a lot of power).
The air cooled CRF and TTR type bikes are hopelessly underpowered in the sand and their cast iron barrels wear out quickly if the air filter is not kept in optimum condition.
The 450's are too much bike for a novice and the 250 2t MX bikes will scare the crap out of you.
The KDX's are bullet proof and seem to last better in the sand than the KTM 200's do.

So my vote would be a KDX 200/220  :thumleft:

What would you suggest in the R20k range besides a KDX200? I agree with Rough Rider but open to suggestions.

Not going to divulge what I paid for my CRF but let's just say you can find a lot of bikes for your budget if you are patient and find a seller that wants to move his bike quickly  :deal:

KTM 200 R25k +- :thumleft: why settle for a kdx when you can get a KTM in your price range.

Honestly.. I don't know, I think I need to spend some time on 2T bikes before I commit to getting one, I rode Buffs one the other day and it blew my socks off, I over cooked every corner.. I think I may just be better suited to a style of riding that is 4 stroke.

Dwerg, what CRF do you have, I was looking at a CRF450X, 2007, very neat for R30k.. but I was thinking of holding out for a 2008 model.

Put some weight on the f wheel and gear it lots a of guys campaign them successfully, determine what you want to do then decide, but rule of thumb best allrounder its back to the KDX

I have a 2008 450X. They are more or less the same from 05 to 08 I think. Sidetrack and those okes know more on the mechanical side. I am loving mine so far. That being said, I'd like a 200 2t too but not the KDX. If you are a relatively good rider and like pushing yourself and your bike, you'll outgrow it in no time. On the other hand, it's the perfect bike to pass on to the lighty when you do tire of it

Muz, let's organize a play date at The Barrel again and you can take my WR450 and YZ250 for another spin and then decide. I might even be able to organize a KDX for you to try as well.

From the little experience I've gained this year I can promise you that if you're planning on joining us at the WC Offroads, a 450 is going to snap you. You might finish the races... eventually, but you'll be a lot more broken than on a lighter bike, be that 250 4stroke or 2stroke.

I'm sure Beserker, GJ and 2Stroke Dan will echo these sentiments but ultimately the choice is yours.
