My additional 2c, already echoed by some:

(1) A used 4-stroke older than a couple of years is looking for trouble - unless you know its history and owner.

(2) 2-stroke MX is making your life difficult if you want to do lots of technical riding. A four stroke would be more suitable to trail or "off-road" (relaxed/open) riding, but then again if you must have a 4 stroke I will look at the 250X or WR250 (just always taking a bit of a risk with a high rev 250 enduro thumper when buying used but these bikes have a pretty good reputation)

(3) KDX is a good starter bike - you can always upgrade when you have a better idea of your style, preferred riding environment and needs (especially after riding friends' bikes). You could probably sell the KDX after a year for minimal loss of investment or keep it as a buddy bike (kinda wish I did that)...

Buy a Yammy YZ125 2T, light & nimble ... if you can ride that anywhere/any obstacle ... you can ride anything anywhere.

What about a nice 2nd hand BMW G450X? Great bikes if you ask me? I had one and sold it for R35k to MangoJack on the forum but since he works in UAE, i think its for sale again?

Would be R30k well spent...

The BMW is a bit of a fat underpowered pig compared to other 450s  :deal:

We just did a Transkei opf@k trip on a lot of different bikes
Me on a Husky 450,
2 WRF 450 s
1 WRF 250
1 WRF 300 and yes you can buid one, before someone lets rip.
1 KTM 300
1 KTM 250
2 CRF 230
The little CRFs went absolutely everrywhere and quite easily
Some of the guys on the 450s battled due to lack of crotch height, but I managed, because I am tall.
The 250s weigh the same as a 450.
For serious hill climbing, riverbeds and rough stuff I have to admit the KTM 300 is da business( hate myself now)

My point was this:

I was trying to suggest the BMW G450X because I had one and thought it was a great bike, it had MORE THAN ENOUGH power for me, and Im not even a beginner enduro rider.

You were saying its like a fat under-powered pig?
I dont get that?

So...what Im chirping you about is this, if you thought the 450 was a fat underpowered pig, you should test ride a KTM 990 and then tell me how under-powered your F800GS feels like afterwards.

Im not a BMW-Hater, as my last 3 bikes were BMW's, it just happens that in the last week, I crossed over to a 990, and Im super smiley all the way.

(I had a 650 Xchallenge, G450X and a F800GS)

Cheers and Peace. Just ragging you.

Hijack off.

If you pay some attention you'll know I had a 950. You cant compare a 800cc to a 990cc. Of course the 990 has more power. All I said was the bm 450 doesnt measure up compared to other 450s

I'd love to pay more attention but for 3 reason's I can't:

1.) It's still a week away from pay day, so Im super broke.
2.) I am diagnosed with ADHD.
3.) Look a butterfly!!!

Just because you dont have the riding ability to notice the bikes shortcomings doesnt make it a good bike. Now go buy some more accessories that make you look the part while you ride slow enough not to upset miss daisy
