My 1200GT was alos 5 years old, then the diff packed up alos. It had 17 000km on the clock.

I went to Lenny, first thing he asked me was the service book. Bmw paid for the diff.

3mnths later my Uncles diff on his 1200GT also said bye bye, also 5 years old, full service at Bmw, Lenny paid for that diff also  :thumleft:

So without knowing what happened with Linde, I can promise you the Annuals werent done  :thumleft:

The TRANSPORTERS GSA is 4 years old, full service history, plus Annuals done, rear ESA shock said bye bye, Lenny paid for it in full.

Must I go on with examples??

Lenny is the best in the business, if he declines a claim, then you know, something fishy, end of story  :thumleft:

Bike is terug getrailer PTA toe.

Hi,

I see a lot of critical responses and questions asked about my post. Here is some info for those who are interrested.

-I have excepted that I will be paying for all the repairs but did expect BMW answer my questions. Here is some answers to some of the responses:

-I did buy the bike 2nd hand with 1690km's and were told that it needs to be serviced every 10000km's or every 12 months. The 10k service was done by Bavarian and the diff oil was replaced as per the service schedule. Two intermediate services were then done before the 20k service as I didn't ride that much for about two years(got married) and both of these services were done according to the service schedule which I got from the dealer(they use the VIN number for this). The diff oil was replaced on the second service as I was told that it is better to do so. These services didn't happen at Bavarian as the bike was already out of warranty. Lenny told me that if these services were done with a BMW dealer, a goodwill claim could be submitted even though the warranty expired.
Lesson learned -  rather service the bike at the dealer if you want their support in a case like this. I did supply my one oil and air filter but confirmed with Bavarian before I booked my service, if that was in order since I had it. I never made a big story about this when a spoke to Lenny, Andrew or Roger but did express my disappointment, frustration and confusion as how this could happen and I am sure they could see that I was pissed off as anyone would be.

-I did however questioned if the diff & gearbox oil was replaced on the 20k service as according to the schedule as it should have been done and it wasn't on the invoice. Neither Bavarian nor Motorrad wants to answer this question as it would implicate Bavarian if this was the cause. So I except that I won't receive a response.

-I haven't received any reports from BMW or Bavarian as I am still waiting for some answers but at this stage don't think I will get any feedback. If there was any other reason how this could happen except human error, then it would be a factory fault or dud or something. So I also excepted that I won't receive a response on that question.

- The bike was never wheelied, been on a dirt road twice and 98% of the kilo's done since I bought it, was on long distance trips. Looked after very well!!

I did try and approach this whole situation the correct way(no fighting, shouting and swearing like I normally would have)  as I still feel that I didn't abuse the bike or did something wrong for this to happen. I do however realise that no dealer(BMW,KTM or any other) would just pay for something like this but did hope for better feedback and support. My main purpose for this post was to get answers from someone and to inform other GS owners that they should focused on looking after their diffs as this is an expensive repair.

As I mentioned in my last post, I still think the GS is a great ride and aren't sure if I want to sell or keep mine when it is fixed, but won't buy the new GSA next year as planned. I hope this answers some of the questions or fill in some of the gaps in the "whole story".

Cheers

Hi Big DoM,

I did speak to the guys at Acme and another supplier of second hand parts(info supplied by Bavarian) but they couldn't tell me how many km's any of the diffs did but the dealer also told me that he did look at the available diff at that time and weren't happy with them and told me to look around some more. I then did find one but was quoted +/- R6000 to get it serviced and fitted which in total would then cost me R11000 for a 2nd hand diff with no guarantee of it lasting any amount of km's. I did however find a new one in England which bought and will take to someone who will fit it for me.

Cheers

No no no, not that easy. If the diff is not on the schedule for a service, even if you do it at another place, BMW would in any event not have done it either. As I understand Linde BMW last worked on the diff at the 20K service. Is that not so?

Is it not possible that the diff could have had a latent defect?

Depending on the total cost of repairs, and if it was worth it, I suppose an opinion from an expert would have been compelling. If the diff had a latent defect, which an expert can determine indeed, BMW would have reconsidered their opinion. Guaranteed !

Manic,

The two major services were done at BMW and I asked the technician who serviced the bike on 10 000km's if it was ok to service the bike privately seeing that it was out of warranty. He said as long as you stick to the service schedule and also suggested that any major should be done by BMW.

But you are right!! I DID LEARN A FEW LESSONS!!

Draadwerk,

I am not sure if the diff could have had a latent defect as I am no expert and that is why I was asking the questions. I do have four other bike (older ones) which I service myself but it is only basic services. When ever something big needs to be done then I take it to some that works with these things everyday. I agree about the expert opinion! I am not that technical and that is why I were expecting some answers so to understand what went wrong.

But what is done is done and I just want to get it fixed and then either sell or keep it , will see.
