We (Me, wife & two kids) are travelling up to Namibia in the bakkie for three weeks in June.

They say the roadworks on the road to Upington via Calvinia & Brandvlei is very bad with long waiting periods at the checkpoints.
Someone suggested going via Springbok & Pofadder, but that is a detour of about 135km.

Anybody that stay in those areas/travelled that way recently that can help me. Is the Calvinia option really that bad, that one should rather
take the Springbok option that is 135km longer?

We will be travelling through Kgalagadi, exiting at Mata Mata, into Namibia!

Please help??

as far as I know the shortest route to namibia is  Springbok, noordoewer, unless you are planning on a eastern side of Namibia tour. From before Niewoudtville there is road works all the way till past brandvlei

where the hell is that. kalahari gemsbok park, i presume. Only joking

I still old school and never bother about these new names, will get lost in my own country.

If I was you i wont bother with the Springbok route, first of all You can do with the rest at those stops, just plan accordingly. Gives the kids a chance to stretch and play abit. Those roads are so traffic free that is it not actually a issue.

135 km is on average an hours drive, I don,t see those stops adding up to that

My wife drove from Loeries via Niewoudville, Calvinia to Kakamas....it took her 8 hrs! The roadworks are hectic. If you want to you can take the dirt road from Loeries directly to Kakamas. It will be the shortest way, but I won't attempt it without a spare wheel or 2.

Jy kan, as jy wil grondpag met die R358  na pofadder toe ry oor Kliprand. Dit is 100 km korter as Springbok om.

WARNING   Take two spares and lots of Tyre Weld on this road. I travel on it quiet often, and get punctures every time  >:( You dont want to be stuck on that road with a flat tyre.....It can be a long wait before help comes along.

Springbok to Upington also has stop-and-goes, but only about an hour delay.  So, via Springbok will take about the same time, as the Calvinia - Upington bit has at least 2 hours - likely 3 hours of stop time.

Via Springbok is possibly more scenic, via Calvinia has the Hantam-huis.  Best afval you have ever tasted.

All the Kakamas people travel via Springbok, even without roadworks.
Work it out !!!!!!
