Jip, these guys came to see us regarding sponsorships and at this stage it looks like it is going to happen, first year just bikes en the next wil be bigger with all the other stuff. Aparently there is going to be a Adventure class which is not going to cost you an arm and leg.. The one partner Edo Mossi, an Italian, did 2 Dakar Rally himself, one on a bike and other alone in a Prado so they know their stuff. He wil obviously be responsible for the communications(like mentioned one would buy the RB from his company I suppose) The one Rally that they do every year is the Merzoga Rally in Morocco.. at this stage that is what I know

Adventure class gonna have to be virtually free to get the numbers .................
Don't let fear hold you back ..... take it with you!

X African Safari Marathon Brief 26th April to 2nd May 2014
« Reply #25 on: July 04, 2013, 02:18:28 pm »
Just got this from George Booker. The plans for a rally in the western Cape in April next year are on track, and he will be meeting with Camelman to see how they can "discuss the way forward for our mutual benefit"  :eek7:

"George Booker from X African Safari Marathon Company, is working with an internationally renowned Dakar Rally Raid partner and will be staging an international Off Road event in South Africa starting on the 26th April and ending on the 2nd May 2014 with the first event in the Western Cape.
This rally takes the form of a Paris/Dakar style rally and intends to bring back rally raiding passion to South African off road enthusiasts.
We have employed an internationally experienced course designer to lay out the 1800km plus course.
African Safari Marathon Company will hold the first ever seven day off road marathon for, bikes, Quads and SSV’s in line with the FIM and FIA regulations governing off road rallying worldwide up the West Coast of South Africa.
Other than a large overseas contingent of riders we will have approximately in excess of 150 participants in various classes.
Alongside the Racing competitors we have an adventure ride for non participating riders who would like to enjoy the flavour of the entire event but have the pleasure of a great adventure ride over seven days.
These adventure riders will have all the privileges at the race and bivouac and can experience the rally, including all the safety and security of the actual event.

The Rally will start and end from the Waterfront in Cape Town using the Granger Bay Lookout as a head quarters for documentation and technical Scruteneering.
The Parc ferme will be around the big Ferris wheel at the entrance to the Waterfront complex and the start and finish podium will be adjacent to the Parc ferme.
Bikes will be parked at Parc Ferme after Scruteneering on the 26th April until 12.00 on the 27th April when they will be released to complete the prologue.

Rider interviews and interaction with the public will take place in this area with TV interviews being conducted in the atrium alongside the V&A shopping centre.
The prologue to determine start positions will be staged at the Melkbos 4 x 4 venue over a 30km course on the 27th April 2014 followed on the 28th April 2014 with a 300 km section up to Vredendal.

The overnight bivouac for three days will be situated in Vredendal show grounds. This facility can cater for over 600 competitors and support crew.
The two racing sections of 300 km near Vredendal will cross the wine farming region.
Local Griqua dancers and cultural event are planned to coincide with the three day stay and upwards of 20,000 people are expected to attend the festivities at the show ground.

We race back to Cape Town on the 1st May, to end in at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town on the 2nd May after a 100 kilometre final stage.
The finish will be in the 4x4 dune park, and the podium will be at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Helicopters medivac and camera support will follow the race every day for local and international TV.
We have a medical evacuation facility for air evacuation of any injured participant’s as well as full medical facilities at the bivouacs every day within a 15 minute period of an incident report.

Each and every participant will be tracked via satellite and we at race control will be able to determine the location of every competitor along the entire route. Medical emergency panic buttons are included in this package, so that the competitors can summon medical assistance in the event of an accident.
There will be a doctor/ Medic on a motorcycle for every thirty competitors on the route.

The Route, which will take six months to plot and verify will be filmed and recorded by internationally renowned route specialist so that it will be of FIM international standards.
In case of emergency we will have the entire route on digital format, in conjunction with the tracking system we will be able to verify the location of any competitor to an exact location and be able to make a call for emergency evacuation if the need arose.

Monica de Jager of Namaqua West coast tourism is assisting us with local business to identify a needy organization which we can contribute to in Vredendal.
Media support and communication will be handled by a team headed up by Maria Guidotti, who currently handles the entire PR for the Honda Dakar team.

Areas covered will be:
•   Functions and events prior to the rally.
•   Press launch in South Africa, France and Holland
•   Radio in South Africa.
•   Supersport television, both locally and internationally.
•   Print
•   Electronic media, Facebook, twitter etc

The X African Safari Marathon offers a rare opportunity to associate with values such as courage, surpassing oneself, competition and human adventure."

In a separate mail he confirmed a few other points:
"Entry fee is still under consideration and will be announced once entries open and that should be in week 3 of July (I read that as somewhere between 15 and 19 July)
The adventure ride is an integral part of the rally as these riders will probably outnumber the competitors. I have had an overwhelming response to the adventure ride as these riders will be having numbers on their bikes, be parked at Parc ferme in Cape Town, leave and start on the same podium as the riders and basically share in the whole rally experience without the pressure of the rally and fantastic routes to follow each day.

The beauty of their ride is that they can sit out any day they like if they so desire and enjoy the local hospitality of the wine farms in and around Vredendal, our major sponsor is a local wine company, bring the family if they so desire, sleep at the bivouac, at one of the two hotels hotel, camp in the caravan park over the road from the Vredendal showground’s which is the bivouac  or one of the many B&B’s in the area, their choice.

Every rider and competitor will be fitted with a tracking device by us at Scruteneering, which can either be bought or a deposit paid and returned after the rally to us. This device will enable anyone with internet access to be able to locate any rider  all the time...

The rules will be the same FIM standard."

A sponsor dossier is attached with some more info.

It would be great if the entry is less than R6000, that means I can just transfer the bucks from Amageza

What would be the rules limitating engine size, for both the race and adventure class?
Does your bike have to be road legal?

I asked all of the above, and was told that all would be revealed towards the end of July.
A pointer would be "The rules will be the same FIM standard"

Then be ready for 6000+ entry fee.
Seriously the organizers should have considered the Amageza and not decided to go on their own if they were serious about the sport, I suspect they may not be doing this in the same spirit as Amageza. But that us just my view from the office chair. :sip:

Ja, I Agree RobC its a pity the organizers did not go with Alex. Anyway here is one Alex will be able to enter as a competitor, which I know has also been his dream! :thumleft:

I wish George Booker all the best, and am very curious who will be doing the road book.
