Anyone have issues with fork seals on their 690R?
« on: June 04, 2013, 11:39:07 am »
My front left fork is leaking oil after two outrides in the Dullstroom area this weekend.
I can't see any damage to the stanchion or the seal going around it.

Have any of you had issues with leaking fork seals? The bike is still practically brand new (less than 2000 kilos on the clock).  ???

Have not had any of those.
So far looks like it could've been some muck that got up in there under the rubber hood.
Will see after a quick test ride if it's still leaking.

fork seals are  a wear and tear item, small seal leaks normally because of grit getting in there,  you have to replace seals from time to time and clean them regularly - they also do not like high pressure washers

Anyone sell these locally? Don't feel like paying 57 us dollars for shipping a 24 dollar item.

I have much better luck using neoprene fork socks.

I used to get a leak, especially with muddy or wet sand type riding. since I've had them on for the last 2 years, not one leak.
I wonder where that gravel road goes? And that, has usually made all the difference. (Apologies to Mr Frost)

Use a thin (.10mm)mm feeler gauge - but make sure that it doesn't have any sharp edges. A camera film also works well - but it's hard to find these days  ;).
Take off the outer dust seal, carefully insert the feeler gauge into the oil seal and move it around the inner fork tube in a downward motion. That will solve your problem in many cases. If that doesn't help have new fork seals installed. Stay away from aftermarket seals as most of them have a lot of friction. Rather use the new generation WP (made by SKF) seals. They are green or red and seem to last longer and still have less friction.
I have stock - if you can't get them locally...

Also a good idea...specially when you do a lot of sand riding...

Exactly this happened to me 2 weeks ago on my 690R, the front left fork seal also started leaking. I then bought one of these tools from RAD for R320 and voila! Problem solved.
GODSPEED!

I used an old business card the other day to get up in there and give it a wipe.
I either shoved what was causing the leak up into the shock or got it out
cos the leaking has pretty much stopped. Did a hectic ride on Sunday and no leak. :)

But I'll pop in at RAD this weekend. They really seem fairly well stocked compared to
my local shop.

Thanks guys for the advice - will look into the neoprene option too.  :thumleft: :thumleft:
