DR 200 Valves and Rings
« on: June 07, 2013, 09:12:52 am »
Anyone here have a set of valves (especially the intake) for a Djebel/DR200. Allso looking for standard size piston rings.

Make sure you get the correct rings. Since you say standard size I assume it's the older (pre 2000) cast sleeve rings (which come in STD and OS) you are looking for.
The 2000ff SCEM cylinders take different rings.

If the cylinder is not so lekker any more rather go all out and rebore OS rather than just replacing rings. New rings on an old piston in a worn cylinder won't do much good.

Yes it is a 1993 SEP, The Cylinder look good, currently at the engineering shop, they just suggested a "hone" of the sleeve. Piston also good, just the top ring is a bit sharp on the edge, so decide to replace rings.

Thanks for the tip on the cast sleeve rings.

Why no just go to the agents? Suz parts are cheap.

Try Suzuki motorcycle mecca in Pretoria central, otherwise internet Kientech or procycle...

...The Cylinder look good ... they just suggested a "hone" of the sleeve ...

Contradiction ???
If the cylinder looks good why hone it?

If it maybe does not really look so good any more you can hone it until the end of all days - it will not get less oval.

They probably plan to use one of those flexi hone toilet brushes ???

Maybe try another engineering shop.

I agree with Lecap, honing will only smooth out the rough spots! Any motor engineering shop will most probably be able to measure the oval state of cylinder and piston + piston fit etc...

If oval and its the nicasil barrel rather go route of rebore ,re nicasil and oversize piston...

Why the new valves ? bent or broken?

Just came back from the engineering shop. It is definatly a pre nicasil sleeve 1993 model. The guy confirmed and showed me, that the sleeve is well within spec for just a hone and new rings. They can re bore but then obviously it will shoot up the cost. (new piston etc.)
The intake valve is pitted on the face, they cannot cut it any further so therefore I need a replacement. The exhaust valve looks good but I was thinking to replace them both.

Yip they are fine, they did a nice beadblast job on the seats and chamber. Looks like new.

Honing is effected when changing ring sets in a used liner that is still well with in spec. It cleans up the odd imperfections and deglazes the liner surfaces. You get different methods or types of hones used to achieve different desired results. The spring loaded type are generally just for de-glazing
When re-ringing, it is done to de-glaze the cylinder,  again to permit good ring seating.

I have replaced rings without de-glazing but the experts recon, always de-glaze to permit good ring seating and assist with running in.
Do not let fear and inhibitions dictate your life.
