some friendly debate - ktm990 or bmw1200gsa
« on: June 26, 2013, 09:47:36 am »
Riiiight, so main purpose for the bike will be:

Commute
Short touring 300-600km a trip (either monthly or every second month)
Long touring 6,000-10,000km trips over 3-4weeks
Dual purposes but not heavy off roading (sand, gravel roads mainly)
Both models are in the 06/07 range.
Both comewith panniers and topboxs.
Both have roughly 50k on the clock
More or less same price.

Aside from the extras, what is pro and con of each?

Pro's
BMW - better on-road manners - exceptionally comfy tourer - lots of space for 2-up riding - low COG
KTM - better off-road - narrower for commuting

Cons
BMW - Heavy - parts expensive
KTM - Parts expensive - chain

See if you can test both and you will know!

If you are young at heart buy KTM, to race wherever you go, If you are older BMW ,the best
BMW in my opinion, will never pick up any problems.

Oh yes, forgot to add, touring will be done 2 up as misses will come with. So suspensions and comfort for long distance is a must.

For some applications, the BMW is the better choice. For others, the KTM is the only choice.
Why do things that only happen to stupid people always happen to me?

This thread will go on forever with okes telling you what they like.

Silvrav, take my 990R for a ride (serious offer) and you decide! You know the BMW, so the only way is to test them both out.

KTM is definitely a "rougher" ride on road, but....................hell man, it tightens my nuts everytime I ride it!!!

You'll have to choose mate!
It is better to ask for forgiveness than permission!

I read the opinions here above and I think they are good and accurate opions.  :snorting:

Here's my 5cents.

I sold my BMW 1100 GS which was developed (a lot)  :lol8: to eventually become the 1200 GS.

Used mine on anything from long tours, really bad Lesotho roads and even included laps on Zwatkops and Kayalami racetracks...

Did 60 000km on it without a single issue whatsoever.  :ricky:

Reason I sold it? Well it was so good at everything that it actually became boring.  That being said, for any bike to be able to do everything  pretty well, it mast be an amazing bike.  :thumleft: :thumleft:  BUT always keep in mind that altough the BMW is good in all respects, it's far from perfect for any specific applications, so there is always a compromise...

I do think the KTM may be abit of a sharper tool and a little more focused = exciting?? :pot:

However as said by others, for your purposes the BMW will undoubtedly satisfy.
