DRZ400 Advice needed
« on: June 27, 2013, 05:14:49 pm »
I am throwing it out there for some level headed advice.

I had a DRZ400 in 2005 and it was an excellent bike.  Loved it.

It came time to upgrade my son to a bigger bike and a client of mine was selling his DRZ.  I had listened periodically how he had had the motor done and work done on the bike so it seemed like a safe bet for a 2001 model at R22k as what could go wrong?

Well after paying the R22k my son has had three breakdowns and I have spent another R6k.  Today it just stopped running with an electrical fault,  the week earlier it was the FCR39 Carb valve and seal.  I really thought we would be over the hurdles.

I am now at the crossroads on this bike, BMW have offered a trade-in on the bike with electrical fault of less than the purchase price let alone the repair costs.

I really do not want to sell my problems on to another person on Gumtree, so what the hell do I do?  Sell it as spares?  I can see the motor has been done over but now BMW tell me the clutch will need doing as well.

Frustrated

If it is electrical it is probably the stator >:(  There is a thread on Thumpertalk that explain how to test it, and how to replace it. If it is the stator I recommend you buy a new one, bet prices n Thumpertalk. If you want to rewire, make sure good quality copper wire with insulation that can stand a bit of heat is used

Thanks for that, it just died with no ignition lights - no electrical supply at all.  Battery was replaced 17 May :(

I assume you have checked the fuse at the battery. Also check all the connections behind the head light. There is a single yellow and green wire close to the wire that connects close to the ignition in the harness. (Well on mine at least  ;) ). Check the plug from the regulator that plugs into the CDI

Thanks so much, I will rework the wiring and check the connections

The bike should run even with no battery, I would also check connections and possible stator failure.

If I am reading this right from all the posts, I should fit new lugs to all connections to ensure a good connection & then replace the stator, which costs?

I would first just check all the connections, loose or corroded. Only replace the stator if any of the test fail (As per TT thread or workshop manual) But like Sidetrack said, if the battery is charged and the stator faulty it should still start and run untill battery is flat. My guess is there is a faulty connection

I was told the battery was in bad shape but was also told it should run regardless

Although the battery is only a month old, possibly the electrical fault could have contributed to the battery problem too

Not sure you do, just had to replace the valve and seal.  Retail price for both is just short of R3k

I can bring a new carb in from the US for about 3k. I wonder what Suzuki South will charge me.

Okay, it seems the advice was well founded - the mechanic told me the wiring behind the headlight was damaged.

I had to get a mechani involved as I couldn't fetch it from where it had broken down :(

Will comment more when it comes back!

Many thanks to everyone, the bike is sorted after the insulation on the wires was repaired.

Now it is at the mechanic for a roadworthy and after that up for sale.  Not really fit for the purpose of a commuter.

Thanks again everyone
