KZN (and other) DOGS ... this is special
« on: June 30, 2013, 12:41:51 pm »
I came across the African Bird of Prey Sanctuary on the road to the Lion Park, near PMB, and was blown away. It provides a dignified and caring home for well over 70 raptors, owls and vultures that, for one reason or another, no longer can fend for themselves. The most recent addition is a Bearded Vulture or lammergeyer (Gypaetus barbatus), the only captive BV in the world, that was confiscated from a traditional healer in Lesotho who used her for divining purposes. She was kept in a goat shelter for 5 years and, unable to do what these birds do naturally, now has a new home. It is hoped in time she will breed  and for the offspring to be released in the wild.
A good time to visit the sanctuary is during flight displays, and vulture feeding time. It also makes for the perfect family outing. www.africanraptor.co.za

I am sure there is a thread somewhere where WD members spotted this bird on the way to the roof .
I am sure they reported it to the SPCA.

The plan is to take a ride out there and have a look ... Butch?
and BTW, the happy ending of this story is due to the concern of fellow WDs, notably Throttlejockey who first raised the plight of this bird http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=95815.0
Take a bow, Sir, and its is only incumbent on other WDs to celebrate this remarkable story.

The African Bird of Prey sanctuary is amazing.I have been there a few times and every time is better than the first. They do a falconry show everyday at about ten o'clock ,if my memoryserves me correct, and the lady who does the shows is good to chat to as she is so knowledgeable about the birds, especially the raptors.I'm sure they could do with all the support they can get.As far as i know there are no camping facilities, but there is a small coffee shop where you can buy burgers, toasted armies etc.The variety of species on display is vast and the entry fee is small (40bucks).really worth it.

From Pietermaritzburg: Travel 18km east on the N3 towards Durban. Turn left at Exit 65 (Lynnfield Park) and travel 4km along the Lion Park Road. The African Bird of Prey Sanctuary is on your right.
