Eish ! Its frustrating not to have foties to show you. Today I practiced stop and roll backs. Balance is getting better and what a lekker feeling. Also, accidently, while practicing front wheel lifts(getting brave) did a few nice wheelies, where I could almost feel the balance point.

One and a half hour practice and I'm quite moer toe.

The trials bike community is really small and friendly.
Register on http://www.capetrials.co.za/
and ask for riders in your area.
They all know of bikes for sale and you should be able to pick up a reasonable bike.
I bought a Beta Rev3 for R 15 000.
Needed a bit of work, but they are so basic that not much can go wrong.
I was then offered a Gasgas 280 pro as well.
Decided to try it as well.
I am now trying to decide between the two.
The trials bikes are actually the cheapest bikes you can get and the most fun.

Trials riding is possibly one of the best sports ever, teaches you balance, body English, patience, improves foul vocabulary no end, watch your fitness level improve dramatically while having fun.  I had a Bultaco Sherpa 350 back in the early 70's, loads of torque. We also used our bikes for oval track racing. Oh yes, the satisfaction one gets by conquering an obstacle that has been bothering you for some time. I loved the Widow makers with a 2,0 foot lip at the top.
Bum in the saddle, always.

Wihan, ek is in PE.

I disagree with this to a certain extent.
A LOT of guys buy trials bikes and then don't ride them.
They stand around in the shed and then are eventually sold.
Standing unused isn't good for a bike, but it's fixable.
Also, the really good guys upgrade every few years so there are actually quite a few bikes on the market.
They sell their bikes to the lower ranks so unless you ask around you won't know about these bikes.
I got a '02 Beta Rev3 that hadn't been used for years for R 13 000.
Had a whole lot of issues (brakes, carb, exhaust, wheel bearings) but after spending R 3000 it's in good reliable riding condition.
Speak to Mike in Knysna.

Been looking at all the different brands....there seems to be two different types of bike: Pro and Racing. Are they for different disciplines and what is the difference between the bikes? ???

None of the 2nd hand bikes advertised specify which type........what do you look for in a bike, and how do you know what you get.....?

Sorry still no pics, but thought I'd share. Had my first real trial ride yesterday. Played around in the river valley close to my house. One particular spot has some nice windy climbs up die kloof face. Just outside my comfort zone, but it went very well. Good spot where you can progress in steps.

This was the kicker. On the way to the riding spot there was this one rocky section with a steep, smooth drop about 10m long. I was dubious, I can paddle down, but how do I get back up. No worries, says my instructor, he'll ride it back up. Good then.

Whole afternoon I had that rock face in my head, I can do it , just focus. With the afternoon practice done my confidence was high. We returned and got to the rock face. Masehare, it looked daunting. Focus, gooi 1000 yard stare and go. Warra lekka feeling. Just one touch and I was at the top. Baby steps  :thumleft:

I'll take  a pic when I get my camera back.

I met a guy at a braai who has a Gas Gas 250 that has been standing for at least 4 years.  After I expressed interest he's willing to give it away because it quite buggered.

He says it has the following issues:

1) Plastics are cracked and buggered
2) Fork seals are blown
3) Gear selector fork inside the engine broke and was repaired by welding (no issues  since)
4) Its been standing for 4 years so tyres/chain/oil etc will need replacing and he's not sure if it will start (probably not), but it did run.
5) Fork clamp is cracked at one point but he says its been like that for years without any issues.

I'm very very interested but need some info:

1) Where do I get spares?
2) Who is the Gas Gas agent?

I'm thinking that this could suite me down to ground because I just want something to learn on, something cheap but still capable that I wont worry about if it gets hammered.  Once I know what I'm doing I can decide whether I need to buy something more bling.

Any comments/advice appreciated.

I'll probably go look at it tonight.

Thanks.

I went and had a look at the bike.

I'm afraid it was a bit TOO buggered, it would need a complete rebuild of virtually everything, frame, motor, shocks, brakes, clutch - not worth it unfortunately.

Pity I got quite excited.  So still looking....
