Into Africa - DASKOP's 12000km drive
« on: August 16, 2013, 01:55:10 pm »
So this is my version of "The long awaited African adventure".

Some patience is going to be required, as I have a few thousand photos to sift through and sequence.

Day 1 - 26 June 2013 - PE to Murraysburg.

Amazing weather to start the trip with. We were warned that it was going to start raining soon, so we left 2 days earlier than planned. I was not complaining. Could not wait to get this show on the road.

We left from Bob's Appliance World (the only place for kitting out your kitchen, beefing up your bedroom, livening up your lounge..... you get the picture.)

The trip to Murraysburg went without a hitch.

You know you've landed with the wheels up when it takes full power to taxi to the ramp.

Dag 1; 26 Junie 2013

Ons stop in Murraysburg en nadat ons die fietse se pense volgemaak het, is Murphy op soek na binneste versterking in die vorm van OB's. Toe ek by Murraysburg se drankwinkel stop is hy al klaar binne.

Still day 1 at Freek se Hut.

As the afternoon shadows crept in, awareness of the coming cold started. This was reinforced when the fire wood arrived by the trailer full. Soon the smoke was drifting into the quiet Karoo air that was becoming crispier all the time. That OB's has its work cut out for tonight.

We took a walk down to the river. Peaceful and tranquil setting. Maybe a slight realisation of the privilege to have started this adventure that not many people get the opportunity to do. The first inkling of the blessing that has been bestowed upon me.

Then we had our first sunset of our trip into Africa. A memorable introduction to some spectacular experiences to come.

Day 2; Murraysburg to Upington.

The previous nights cold was clearly evident on the bikes. My bike, despite having a brand new battery, was sluggish to start and my heart skipped a few beats.

Even Murphy was cold.

Wisely, we wait for the sun to rise before we leave. Looking forward to more of the nice gravel roads we encountered the day before.

Day 2 Murraysburg to Upington

As a cold Murraysburg was its normal hive of activity, we stopped outside the town to check that all was OK.

It was gravel to Victoria West. Early morning in the Karoo. Adventure biking heaven.

Stopped at Victoria West to have some seriously needed HOT beverages. Even the local Traffic Cops were stocking up on coffee and doughnuts, basking in the sun like dassies.

Out of Victoria West the R403 secondary road started as a 2 spoor and then changed many times between loose gravel, sand, ruts, corrugations, potholes and once again, gravel. JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED!!!!!!!! Practical driving training.

The last section of the gravel road, just before the T onto the tar, had a blind rise which crested onto a deep wash-away, filled with very loose rock. Fortunately none of us got the Title Deed for that piece of land.

Day 2 to Upington.

Just a few more photos for now.

Big thank you again to Ben and his team at BMW Upington. They were really very accommodating. Murphy was very fortunate, it could have been a lot worse and a lot more expensive.

I hope that Sakkie se Arkie have changed their misinformative web page to reflect the true state of affairs.

We had supper at the Spur and then spent the evening sleeping indoors and awoke to a cold Upington. Namibia was around the corner.
