Ive had a KLR and now have a DR and a few other bikes along the way.  Prefer the DR over the KLR but mine has had some mods done:  bigger tank, suspension, pipe and jetting.

All being equal i would like either a 650 x challenge with big tank second hand or the 690 ktm after this.
Love the one you are with

I have to be honest out of the list of bikes mentioned If you want something that can really tackle some of the rougher stuff like your existing bike then the XR600 is the one to go for.

Look there is no denying that a XR is awesome but again, would you rather buy a 20 y/o bike with major 'legend tax' that's been pulled through various naughts, or a bike that is nearly as capable and virtually new?

Probably off topic, but I think one should also look at the further costs regarding accessories. What I mean is that eventually you would want to fit this and that accessory. For some bikes you have a choice between 5 different brands and with other bikes, you will probably only find farkles at the agents or some expensive brands.

So the X is looking more interesting than the others right now. What say the X owners/previous owners?

There were a few rather nice KTM 640 adv's on the forum for sale recently, have you considered one of them?

Try to ping LuckyStriker (current owner) and Kaboef (ex owner). They both think highly of the bike but with the reported suspension problems and smallish tank it needs some attention to make it a proper distance tourer. Very frugal with the little bit of juice in the standard tank and the build quality is pure BMW - would feel bad scratching it. Pretty bike.

If you extended the budget to afford the X, also have a look at something like this:

Without being bias if you look around you could find a 650 Transalp for 35-38k, very reliable and comfortable, carries luggage and works two up as well.

From reading the reports, I've never seen anyone complain about the X-challenge not doing its job. Its always a question of what you want it for.

Also chat to Metaljockey, who has really put his through its paces.

Xchallenge is not a budget bike... at least not when things go boom.

KLR/DR/XRL

XR650L for about 25k would be a great start.

Adding my 2c.
I've heard plenty good things about the X-challenge and I've also read all those Advrider threads. The only issues I've heard of had to do with that funny back shock :eek7:

Are they not quite pricy to set up for the longer trips though?
How much are the tanks and you would surely change the seat as well. (and a screen?)

I've been riding this XT660r for about a week now and I can't wipe the grin of my face. I'm also hoping to have my 2011XR650 in 2weeks time :ricky: :ricky: :ricky: Not sure which one to take to the Bash :snorting:

F800GS, XT660R....and soon to add XR650L
