BMW 1200 LC Air filter
« on: September 03, 2013, 09:43:38 pm »
Has anyone checked the air box for dust like we had to do on the older 1200's and the 1190's?  I noticed that DNA produces an oiled air filter for the new 1200, but it is necessary?

I have not opened mine.  Just wondering if anyone has?

Gooi some pics....  8)

I can give you a DNA Airfilter which makes a huge difference when you look at the airflow rate.
It also means you buy one airfilter, I really rate the DNA product I use it on all my bikes, race offroad and road:

STAGE 1 which is the normal replacement filter see attached flow rate advantage - R998.00 each.

Why change airfilter - simply really you don't have to buy a new one every service and the motor breaths better and performs better. It also doesn't de-generate like a paper filter, so when it gets to the end of your service period the motor isn't sucking in kak.

STAGE 2 - which really makes a huge difference to your performance especially here at the Reef, where the air is thin. R 1798.00

See below specs.

We proudly announce the official release of the DNA Stage 2 Adventure Expedition Kit R-BM12E13-S2 for the:

BMW R 1200 GS 13' (K50)

● This new "DNA Stage 2 Adventure Expedition Kit" replaces the stock BMW air filter and the "restricting" plastic frame.

● Designed to "sit" lower than the stock filter, frees the 2 air flow passages that direct the cold air from the front of the bike to the filter. Smoothly directing the incoming air towards the lower air box, we eliminate restriction, turbulence and improving torque and power.

● With an active filtering surface of 132.300 mm2 this "DNA Adventure Expedition Air Filter" has 80% larger filtering surface and +38.5% air flow, compared to the standard replacement air filter.

DNA S2 Adventure Expedition Kit flow: 181.40 CFM

(Cubic feet per minute) @1,5"H2O corrected @ 25degrees Celsius

Bmw stock air filter flow: 131.00 CFM

(Cubic feet per minute) @1,5"H2O corrected @ 25degrees Celsius

● The increased filtering surface and air flow will significantly extent the service intervals of the filter allowing the user to travel longer before cleaning the filter.

Regardless the revolutionary new design the filtering efficiency2 remains very high at 98-99%, with 4 layers of DNAŽ Cotton.

● This DNAŽ S2 application can be used for road and off road use.

Apologies to SGB for the slight hijack, but figured the topic title justified it  8)

I've heard a number of bikers complain about the increased induction noise when swapping out the OEM filter for a high flow version (BNC, K&N, etc.)
I have what I see is the stage 1 BNC, makes a nice difference to throttle response I do admit.
But it was very intrusive at mid-range throttle roll-on given the air intake sits right below your helmet.

I tried a simple pooratech fix - a bit of 20mm HD foam (from an old hikers mattress) cut to shape and fit on top of the airbox - make a big difference. Still enough induction noise to sound sexy, but not stressful to the ear, and of course the benefit of actually having the filter!  :ricky:

Just goes to show one can still have pooratech fixes on a R180k machine

Cheers
