GrootRivier Poort Again
« on: September 11, 2013, 06:04:07 pm »
Decided it was time for a solo bike ride again.
Bad weather predicted, but just improved as I rode. It was predicted to get worse. I decided to ride anyway, just took a rain suit with.

Looking over the lady slipper mountain the clouds in the area I was heading looked like ran. I decided I'd ride until it got too misty or started raining.

as I rode it cleared

But the higher mountains towards where I was riding still looked gloom

But they also cleared

And girls are darn thankful for that

and so I continued

The road was tough in a few places

But I always love this area. On bad weather days like today, you are all alone up there. the first time I saw people was on my way home.

Grootrivier crossing! This used to be a popular water crossing, but they're making it safe.
Progress isn't always that great
we'll see what it looks like after the next flood

2nd pic is the water outlet through pipes

rode up the other side for lunch then back home again

these solo rides are really good for me.

lots of sections of road has been washed away, with bakkies making their own route next to the rode. decided to stick to the original rode. Wasn't too bad for a bike

Then, true to form,
a puncture.

discovered it along kragga kamma rd while over taking a car, when the back wheel swung out a wee bit.
just rode home slowly and found a piece of scissors in the tyre.

New tube required

fixed puncture and rode around a bit just for fun.

Shit I cannot believe they have faarked up the river crossing at the bottom ... that is just a BIG shame as it really made the Grootrivierpoort  ??? ::)

Still thinking about this  :-\  Going back some years before it was better known ... there used to be a braai grid that hung in a tree at the bottom at the water crossing that adventure riders used to use and then leave for the next guys. I hope they have not destroyed the whole shady rustig area??

Don't worry - the next big rain will open that water crossing properly , those little pipes wont even handle a mild rain storm .

Up until earlier this year, that braai grid was still in the tree. The last time we passed through there, +- 3 months ago, there were contractors working on the Steytlerville side up to the Poort and had loaders and equipment stored at the Poort,  I noticed the grid was gone!
