I see the bikes with the mini-fairing have their 'tower' attached to the forks or triple clamps instead of the frame, like the full-faired bikes.

I assume this lightens the bike quite a bit but puts more weight on the bars - dunno which is better.

Seems a good conversion for our local rallies, enabling the bike to be returned to stock fairly easily, and will save on costs as well.

Any thoughts?

Just thinking ahead to the next amageza, etc .............  ;)

Great pics, BTW, now I really wish I was back on a bike

Yes this is the cheapest setup for a rally bike, but you are right it does have its disadvantages too in that there is "more to steer" and if you flip the bike your nav. gear will likely be killed. This was discussed at length earlier in the Amageza thread if you want to have a look.
Rally nut. What could possibly go wrong?

And from Garth via FB (edited slightly)

"What a day...had such an awesome first special of 150km...started at the back cos of my nav tower breaking yesterday, passed all the slow guys. Really good special. The 2nd special of 288km was rough and fast. I went very well until 182km when I got lost with another fast rider. A slower rider that we had passed earlier shot in front if us. When we found the route, I tried to pass and hit a big rock in 4th - went down hard. Nothing broken but very sore....I managed to do the last 80km at pace but I lost 35min at end of the special. Will see what the results say."

Results from Day 4 have been posted. The field is thinning out quite a bit, with some discussion on ADVrider about reasons. "Submitting relatively small, internal high combustion single cylinder, multi-valve four srtoke engines to hours of heat, dust and rough terrain abuse at sustained high speeds" sounds the best so far.

Both of our guys are still in  but the sexy Aprilia is out, as are both of the classic 1980's BMW boxers. One of the BMW riders is out with a broken collarbone.  :o

From http://www.australasiansafari.com.au

"At 9.33am today there was an incident involving moto competitor 19, Ivan Erceg, on Stage 1, 50km east of Minilya Roadhouse near Carnarvon in Western Australia.
Despite the immediate intervention of emergency services, he died at the scene as a result of his injuries.
Australasian Safari Event Director Justin Hunt said:  “We extend our sincerest sympathies to Ivan’s family, team members and friends at this time.  Ivan was one of life’s huge characters and was loved by the entire Safari family.
“He was a true competitor who loved his motorbikes and the mateship of competition. He will be sorely missed.”
A full investigation of the circumstances surrounding Ivan’s death has already commenced and organisers are providing full cooperation.
The remainder of today’s Leg of the Australasian Safari was cancelled but the event will resume tomorrow."

Man that is so sad. Ivan seemed to be part of the Safari rally itself. :(

They were just joking about him the day before.

RIP

It's gone a bit quiet today, after the accident yesterday. Both Garth and Glen are still in.
The bikes are doing a shorter route today.

"The autos and side-by-sides will complete the full course as planned and motos and quads will ride the second stage, commencing from the service at Hamelin from approximately 10.30am when the first bike departs"

Something to watch while we wait:

From Glen:
"Last service of the race, leg 6 completed. One more leg to keep the bike upright, finish in Geraldton tomorrow. Broke into the top 20 yesterday, mostly by attrition...."
