I have a guy that wants to sell his RM 250

I don't know much about them $:-\$

It needs a clutch (theres tension when you pull the lever, but it doesnt take)
Needs sprockets and chain (not a major)

How is parts availability and how reliably are they? I know they eat plugs, but what else do I have to worry about?

What model is it? And what does he want for it?

2 T yes. Year I don't know, he doesnt either. Not old ones and not new shape if that helps.

I must make a offer, he bought a quad for some reason and wants to sell th RM to fix the quad

To be honest, the year model will help in determining the price to offer.

Things to look out for is the following:

Wheel bearings

Linkage bearings, if you pick the bike up at the rear just before it leaves the ground you will hear it make a clack noise, you will also feel it.

Forkseals

Maybe take the tank off and see how clean the bike is under the tank and check if the airfilter is clean. You need to clean it before every ride.

You can also take the pipe off and look into the barrel from the front, you can then turn the motor with the kickstarter till you see the piston and see if it as any scratches. If it does, it might be because of piston slap or a dirty motor.

The motor runs beautifully

I wasn't the fastest rider, But it was the cause of 3 shoulder ops and a few shoulder dislocations

! BUT I prepped it before every ride!!

Looks awesome at the track till the first lap. ha ha.

Okay, on closer inspection I found that the frame has been powder coated not so long ago. Vin number must be under the paint somewhere.

Needs the 2 white covers in front by the fuel tank, apparently a 98 to 2001 model according to my friend who rides a RM.

Didn't get time to check bearings and seals. Got a photo, will upload as soon as I get pc time

That looks early to mid 90's , phone the dealers with frame number , they can then tell you the year model . But the bottom line is that it is an old bike , power valve problems were common on these models , replacement parts are about R8000 , so be very careful .

Check that the power valve is ok too, If it drops the power valve it stuffs up the piston and rings too..

That is the beauty of these 2007/8 Jap 2t bikes, you can pick up a beaut for nearly no money.

If you are patient you can pick up 3 KX250/RM250 etc for the price of one KTM 300. And the 300 does not exactly run away from them.

This is most likely a 1989- 1991 model. It is worth nothing . I bought a 1993 KX250 that appeared to be in a much better state than this one. I can’t sell it for half of what it cost to get it running properly. For the money I could have bought an almost new bike.
