DR 650 Backfire and cut out at high speed???
« on: October 03, 2013, 09:12:25 am »
Hi Dogs,

My DR 650 Backfires and cut out at high speed around 110 -120 km/h when accelerating in 5 th gear.

When I rev hard in other gears nothing only in 5th. I thought jetting but it feels like the power is not free flowing under acceleration in 5th.

Any pointers please?

Is the bike standard or does it have any aftermarket stuff (exhaust, big holes cut into airbox...)

Check that you have the correct spark plugs fitted. The bike takes CR10E. NOTHING ELSE!!! (CR10EK's are fine too but cost more and don't give you any real advantage)

ESPECIALY NO CR9E's !!!

Worth a shot to also check the side stand switch.

Hi LeCap and Eisbein

Yes the plugs is fine and I use CR 10e. Have an GSXR pipe and airbox mod, but for 2 years now with no problems.

This new tricks is about a month old. I was wondering about 2 things the kikstand and maybe the white inline fuel filter. I never replaced or try to klean it in 2 years. I use the DR as a daily commute and it does not see any dirt. Or maybe some kind of vacume issue??

What is the difference in spark plugs and what would happen if you have the wrong one?

Hi Guys,

Some feedback, I chucked the side stand switch and found under the seat the small black filter was closed of by some extra sponge. I removed it and touch wood, 3 days of running smooth again ::)

That little filter must be clean. Important. Not mentioned in the service manual for some stupid reason.
If the foam inside the filter perishes you can replace it with a bit of air filter foam NOT with a piece of an old mattress!!!
