i got 19.8km-l on my last trip traveling to rustenburg from benoni with no kit. Doing an average of 140km/h with now and then doing bursts to 180km/h for overtaking. @5L/100km i am sure i wil reach a distance of 400km on a tank including my reserve

I am afraid I do not believe you... Either the speed or the consumption cannot be true. This is the sort of milage done in the economy run and these bikes are tuned to perfection then ridden at half you quoted speed. Ok maybe not fully half the speed.

At 140 to 180 my 1200GS will not give more than even 15 km per liter. Best I ever gotbwas 17.8 riding like my grandma.

I do close to 20km/l regularly.    The difference is not in speed,  I. e.  kmh,  but rather revs used.  On my normal commute I seldom exceed 3500 revs and almost never 4000.  Econorun Class J winners do around 22 and a bit km/l.  At speeds above 120 I. e.  over 4000 revs,  20km/l is unlikely.

my consumption ranges between 10km/l and 20km/l. The 10km/l doesn't happen that often, but tends to happen on open highways fighting wind fully loaded

In town it is around 15-16km/l, and on average it runs at 18-19km/l with mixed riding. I don't keep an eye on fuel consumption most of the time, but have worked it out as above at times

On my GS at 120km/h you are at 4000rpm, is that standard?

2010 GSA - 18.18km/l over the last 35,000km - went down to 16km/l when I came back from East London fully loaded and cruising a fair bit above the speed limit....

I fill up when the odo reads about 550km......

I am a daily PTA-JHB commuter. Consumption varies 4.5-4.8, always better than 20km/l. My GS turns out way more economical than any of my previous e.g. 30k km on rear tyre, now 47k km on odo and still on original brake pads!!

Guys I do not know how you get  20km/Lt.
Mine hovers between 15 and 17 km/Lt. I never ride faster than 140 dirt or tar.
Maybe I should have my bike checked/tweaked.

I do my measurements the old fashioned way - fill, ride, register km done, fill, register liters put in, whip out calculator (read excel), rinse and repeat.
