And then a Description of the 1st stage

LIAISON : 77 KMS – SELECTIVE SECTOR : 203 KMS – LIAISON : 65 KMS

Sand and dunes await participants at the departure of this first step of Oilibya Rally of Morocco 2013.

For the first kilometers, crossing of little dunes. Then, a beautiful part of navigation on many parallel tracks allow them to join the Oued Draa and go in it for several kilometers before hitting the first dunes. Prepare shovels and plates to cross the splendid erg Cheggaga from southwest to northeast!

Then, participants will discover a beautiful valley by crossing tracks more or less fast and will find the pass to reach the finish. Copilots will have hard job for this first

Riaan v Niekerk has reached CP 1 in 14th position.

Joan Barreda has put 3 min on the whole field. He is flying. Coma steady start in 4th, behind Rodrigues and Gonzalves.

People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day. And doing nothing often leads to the very best kind of something.

I reckon Coma will take a second to win the FIM championship, but rather take it easier after his crash last year, which put him out of contention for the Dakar. To much hinges on him not crashing.

Young guys like Bang bang Barreda believe they are indestructible and so are good at low flying. Until they crash.

Looking good for Honda at first. It's a long race.......
So far I like the results very much, Honda under pressure to prove the new bikes worth and the KTM high flyers playing a waiting game.
If you see my Avatar you will know which side I am on, nothing like a bit of competition to improve the breed.

Anyone have links to proper Youtube chanels or torrents for a daily Morrocan desert fix?

Happy and safe adrenalin pumped desert crossings to all participants.

I fully agree. Its about time KTM  got their asses handed to them. One can only hope. They are so strong.

You can do live tracking, the works here:

The conundrum that is life...
You have to be absolutely smashed to have the guts to attempt it,
But perfectly sober to achieve any success!

Stage one Pics from the NPO site

Dutch rider Helneck having an early lunch.

He was not the only one...

My hero Marc Coma :hello2: on the new 2014 KTM 450 RR EFI  :drif:

Gonclaves making it look too easy; and Honda CRF 450 looking simply AWESOME.  :drif:

Chaleco Lopez

Whoopsies!

Sam Sunderland pumping up a dune.

This boy is so quick.  :ricky:

Helder Rodriguez

Cyril Despres? No, but you can be forgivne for thinking its Mud Bandanna Boy. Its actually Ruben Faria pulling away at the start of the special!  :ricky:

Bang Bang Barreda kicking ass big time. He won the stage by over 2 minutes :hello2:

Barreda owning a dune crest....

The guy is pure poetry in motion.

Frans Verhoefen

Vogels, I have not seen this name before, he did well on Monday.

Alain Duclos, Dakar veteran ultimate hard man.

So what do we have at the end of the first stage?

A tough day in the office I think: 5 Did not starts...and 8 DNF's

Honda showed up very strongly with 5 bikes coming in the top seven bikes in. Coming first was Honda's Joan Barreda chopping off a 3'10" advantage over Marc Coma on his new KTM. "Speedy Gonzales" aka Paulo Gonclaves came a worthy 3rd on his CRF just 20 seconds behind Coma - He has been very fast this year indeed, after a few years of crashes and bad luck.

The top three already have a 3 minute gap on on Helder Rodrigues, also on a Honda and the rest of the pack behind him is lead by 5th place Lopez on a KTM followed closely by the Honda rearguard action Pizzolito and Sunderland. Looking down the list is really a who is who of rally raid, with our own South African boy -who is lightning fast- Riaan Van Niekerk, coming in at 16th, some 34 minutes behind pipping american legend Curt Casseli who missed a waypoint and incurred a 20 minutes penalty for his woes.

GOOOOOO RIAAN!!!!  :ricky: :hello2: :hello2: :hello2: :hello2: :hello2:

Tweeted from Sam Sunderland:
Tough day today lots of dust and a few errors, lots of dangers on tomorrow's stage. Congrats to @joanbangbang

Darryl Curtis FB

Stage two of the Rally of Maroc look like this, Liasion 49Km Special 240Km Liasion 9Km, its going to be rough lots of stones and rocks, follow the race and Riaan on his Broadlink KTM at http://vulcain.iritrack.net/tdcom/po.../display/index

Lets see what today brings:

STAGE 2 : FROM JBEL TO JBEL
LIAISON : 49 KMS – SELECTIVE SECTOR : 240 KMS – LIAISON : 9 KMS
Change of setting for the second stage. Participants will have technical tracks where the driver will have to be the cleverest…

Fun fun!!
