Bikers leaving gates open in the Tankwa Karoo
« on: October 20, 2013, 07:08:24 pm »
I take tours through this region and we have received this email below from a property owner in the Tankwa Karoo who is quite rightly highly annoyed by bikers who don't close gates on his property! Like the so called famous "stealth campers" (how would like to wake up in the morning finding someone camping on your lawn?) I still find it hard to believe that some of us don't close farmers gates.

Hi Mandy
I am Andrew Moffat, we own the Tankwa farm "Isle of Sky" Please help me find out who, or which biking group that drive through my farm, continuously leaving the gates open. There are numerous signs!! My game and stock gets out. I have now contacted the roads department to have the road closed. I wish bikers would respect other peoples property. This is on going for years. Please pass on to all bikers. They are not welcome.
Thank you.

does not make any difference IMHO. The rule is that if you find a gate closed, you close it, if it's open, then you leave it open

Irrelevant. I grew up in South West. You could drive where you wanted to. You ALWAYS closed gates you had opened. Got nothing to do with the type of road. It is just plain decency and respect.

I don't think it makes too much of a difference , there are a lot of public roads that go through private property , I believe it is just plain simple courtesy to close gates when we go through them , I know it is a nuisance but the gates are there for a reason and that is to keep the farmers stock in his farm . Just think how the moer in we would be if our gates at home were left open for our pets to get out , same thing really .

It is not only plain decency and respect to close a gate, it is required by law. Cannot believe there are still people not doing it. My way was always for the first guy arriving at the gate to open it, then wait until the last in his group have passed whereafter he closes the gate himself again and fall in at the back of the group, so the group position rotates continuously. Only foolproof way. Have heard to many stories of the front guy opening and expecting the last one to close, which in some confusion never happens.

Why do they just assume it is bikers ??

I don't think it is fair to say bikers are now welcome, maybe they just should have said assholes who can't read are not welcome.

Common decency and law.

Agree, the same person opens and closes the gate, then rotate, no confusion.

Again a few fucking something up for others.

Was the thinking behind my question, not the thing of closing gates. How do they know it is bikers, anyone could have left them open

Maybe we should explain we are adventure  riders.. having a road closed just makes us want to explore it.

It doesn't really matter, to the landowner his perception is his truth, so if he believes it was bikers then bikers will take the blame regardless.

When you live next to or close to a road less travelled you know who used it as you hear vehicles going past. If the gates stay closed and on more than one occassion you find them left open after bikes have passed it is quite obvious. Why would they say it was bikers if it was not so?

Man i hate it when some incosiderate idiot allways ruins it for the rest of us okes who respect farmers. They are polite enough to allow us to travel throught their land so the least we can do is respect them and close their gates and promote that we adventure bikers are actaully good people who respects each other and other peoples property.

What is the etiquette when you reach an open gate.

Do you close it or let it be?

I left the gates open, reasoning that if the sheep want to graze nextdoor, and since they have no hands like us, how would they open the gates?

You should have heard the bleats of thanks. :pot:

Oh yes, a gate found open is left open.

If the gate is open when I get there, I leave it open. (unless there's a sign on asking to close it. Then Ill close it assuming the person before me left it open by mistake.)

Especially in the Karoo. My reasoning for this is: you never know where the farmer's "water trough" is located for the animals.  Close a gate that should be open, and you can prevent animals to get to water, and like 2SD said, grazing as well.
On the bigger karoo farms, this could be a big problem.

If the gate is closed, Close it!
The rock on the post works, if your riding with people you know well. Just use a big enough rock!
Otherwise, first bike stops and opens,   second bike rides through and stops to close, waiting for everyone else to come through.  (this way the first bike doesnt have to stop again after moving his bike through the open gate, both bikes are then at the back and so everyone rotates.)
