A buddy of mine is seriously looking at picking up one of these bikes that everyone seems to love so much ;D
Now that I'm not commuting huge distances I'm seriously thinking of switching from the Transalp too.
My buddy only has scooter and pit bike experience and is looking for a low mileage R50k weekend toy that'll keep him laughing in the dirt but still do two hours slabbing it at 120kph without problems. No commuting.
640/690/Sertao/Tenere are too much money. KLR is a possibility.
Concerns with the XR are:
- It's an old, heavy design, but does it actually feel like an old, heavy bike?
- Is the carb story a mission to maintain? He has zero mechanical know-how.
- Other maintenance? What are the service intervals/costs like?
- Is the highway performance acceptable? Are the revs comfortably low at 120kph?
