The two dinosaurs take a trip - HIGHWAY TO HELL
« on: December 07, 2013, 02:26:02 pm »
This trip once again started with our asses (jukking) to go on ride again. Never realizing that this adventure would test our strength, endurance and stamina.
It would start out as usual with us seeing interesting places, spectacular views, excellent riding meeting new people as well as old buddies, to turn out going down washed away mountain passes and roads and to have to get our bikes across flooded drifts.

Plans were made via email as Ian (otherwise known as) Ian in Great Brak River was out of the country.

Monday 28th October - Meet up at Beaufort West and camp over at Karoo National Park.
Tuesday 29th October - Cruise to Sutherland and check out the stars. (Not the movie type)
Wednesday 30th October - Gooi a drive to Matjiesvlei Guest Farm, a lekker lovely remote place just outside of Calitzdorp.
Thursday 31st October - To The Hell, maybe we meet the ou himself.
Friday 1st November - NO plans we would decide which way.

That's the main route, details on how we got to each place to follow.

Like all good trips planning was made, kit to sort out, bikes to get a bit of attention, stuff to buy like a blow up mattress as I could
not sleep on my faithful stretcher as I had cracked a rib and tore my muscles on the left side three weeks prior to the trip.
You know us Bikers we tough ous so nothing a few pain pills won't help. Good stuff those pain pills they helped.

So now we are ready to start this trip.

Getting all the kit together to pack and a few extras before the start. Kit all packed on Friday 25th October.
Saturday 26th of October of I go to Klerksdorp as I decided to spend the night at my daughter and son in laws place.
Had a wee bit of a too good a kuier there. Partied with them and club members till wee hours of the morning.
Sunday 27th the plan was to leave early but as the head and body was not feeling to lekker only left at 14h00.

Stopped of at the Shell in Kimberly for a much needed break. Head was still pounding a bit.

Mmmmm she looks good nice and clean
A most welcome Burger and a cold one to make the head feel better, which it did and off we go.

Another few hundred kilos and again a well needed smoke break, dam this is a long ride

A view of the essentials inside the tank bag.

Arrive in Hope Town, my plan was to sleep over in Brits Town but it just seemed too far away. Small world met an old friend and his wife there Koos and Liezel coming back from a jol in the Cape some where. Need to catch up on old times so we book in at the Country Lodge (by die Stalle Gaste Huis.) Glad I did.

Biker friendly safe parking for the Bikes Recommend it if you in the area.
Tel 082 260 9110 / 072 550 7878

Koos and Liezel       Dam these ous can party.

Well this been Sunday the bloody kitchens closed and we all stikkend hungry, we chat to Jaco Schultz the owners son as the owner was not there if we could get some thing to eat even a sarmie would do. He goes out of his way to for us, organizes the chef to come in and make a meal for us just as it would be any other day of the week.

We go for the Rump steak with trimmings. Our thanks to the chef the food was excellent.

A good, good couple of cold ones later, full "pens" and we off to our rooms to catch up on some needed sleep.

My Room

Monday morning up nice and early we say our good-byes.

Koos's Bike makes one helluva racket when he starts it.

As I was in no hurry to get going, only had a short distance to go I let the socks dry out.

A good night sleep does wonders.
Full of life off I go to do some sight seeing.

The caravan park I would not recommend.

Take a ride down to the Old Wagon Bridge an easy sand road to get there

Check out the sand road over the bridge

The pillars are made out of stone (Good Engineering those days)

Some Awesome views

The gravel road

It was an easy ride to get there
Back to the old tar and on to Beaufort West, but first a stop at Kambro Pad Stal for some refreshments. Had a home made pie and a coke.

10kms before Britstown from Kimberly way

On the road again and of course a quick stop for a smoke and a few pics

Whilst I was enjoying the ride Ian was coming down from Cape Town on his solo journey. A few pics of his route

On his way down the weather was trying its utmost to catch him

I arrive in Beaufort West I'm early as we planned to meet at 15h00 so I find a nice local place for a few cold ones.
Ian phones at 15h00 to say his still 80km out, no problem I say and have one or two more cold ones. This riding is thirsty
stuff on a man. Ian rocks up and his thirsty so we have another cold one. We buy some skaap tjops and wors and off we go to
the Karoo National Park which is about 5km away.

At the gate they explain were to go and in we go to the campsite.
The camp site and offices is 6km from the gate and we check some wild life on the way.
We get to the enclosure around the camp / office section which has electric fence right around to keep wild life out.
He, He we didn't tell him we were Wild Dogs.

Ok of course we now have to enter the encampment, pull along side each other to the gate only to find the bloody thing
wont open (don't scheme) the bikes weights are enough. I then check these wires in front of our bikes and I scheme to myself
hey man maybe we should move forward some more as they might open the gate.

See wires on the tar other side gate.

Tune Ian, Hey bud lets go forward and see if those wires don't open the gate (now my excuse is that by this time I've had
a good couple of cold ones so not all lekker up there)
Now the people that know me might disagree and say I'm normally not lekker up there, but I think they're just jealous of me.
So with out thinking this through as his normally the logic oke of us two, we move forward and then it dawns on him.
Shit those are electric wires as well. Shouts to me stop and to gently reverse backwards and not to touch the wires.
See told you ous, he is the guy you need on these trips as he is the ou who sees these dangerous things.
Just then a cage comes up from the opposite direction and saves my ...... ( Still scheme that gate might have opened)

In we go book in find a lekker possie and set up camp

My tent

Ian's tent

Check plastic bag keeping meat cold

A few refreshments, Tequila and orange juice.

The shop sells lots of stuff even cold ones, so I take a bit of stock for the night and some wood for a braai and we're all set.

Ian starts the fire so we can start to braai as us ous are lekker honger. He does a mean skaap tjop on a braai never tasted better.
So if you ous ever hang out with Ian get him to braai you some skaap tjops.
So off I go to "verken" this joint, meet the other campers which even if they rode cages they were a lekker bunch of ous.
Have a lekker meal and a few cold ones to round the evening off and then try to catch some zzzz's. My luck pitched my bloody tent on top of a cricket, he was enjoying himself in making my life miserable with his constant cricket noise.
So as I've said, been doing Biking for many, many years, know the tricks, pull two smokes out of pack, break the filters off and remove the paper. Shoved the filters in my ears!!! That will teach that cricket, no more cricket noise any more so I got a lekker peaceful night sleep. Looked for the little bugger the next morning but to his luck I couldn't find him.

Next morning pack up and get the kit on the bikes.

Of we go.

Check some wild life out on the way to the gate

These ous weren't to happy with us.

Take the Molteno Pass road, there's some awesome scenery around to view.

Wish we could of taken a ride on this road, but it looks like it's on private property.
We'll have to find out sometime.

Now this is where the fun actually started.

Some lekker roads to ride, as well as some small drifts to cross, nothing hectic yet.
