PIETERMARITZBURG, KZN - Inspiring legless biker Bushy McKelvey missed bettering the world record for the longest motorcycle ride in 24 hours by a mere 100km on the Phakisa oval in Welkom in the Free State.

He was aiming to go further than the 3250km record  set in Texas in August 2011 by American Russell “Rusty” Vaughn on a 2010 Harley-Davidson Electra-Glide Limited.

McKelvey has two prosthetic legs and started “Out on a Limb”, a project intended to encourage and motivate people to do more despite their physical challenges. He said he was doing well chasing this distance around Welkom’s biggest traffic circle but heavy rain saw him hit the tar, hard, on a new BMW GS 1200.

RAISING MONEY

The fall damaged the Boxer engine’s cowling and the bike lost much of its oil, causing the pit crew to spent 90 feverish minutes on running repairs, including half an hour waiting for a patch of Gun Gum to dry as the seconds ticked by.

McKelvey was trying to raise money to buy a prosthesis for a lady who lost a leg above the knee.

His previous attempt to set the longest bike ride in a day, in Gauteng in March 2013, saw him complete 2267km by 3.30am at which point the tyres on the scooter he was riding could do no more.

For this his most recent attempt the Free State Tourism Board allowed him to use the famous oval track which in 2014 will see the return of international Superbike racing.
