Roof 2014 - The planning begins! Reply #3 on: December 09, 2013, 08:34:44 am

Well done to all.  Can a 44 year old with the total of 6 local enduro's done back in 2007 and 2009 get back in the saddle early January and train like crazy for Roof 2014 and have a hope of finishing?

If so, what bike - surely not my 450 KTM - way to heavy?

baie baie afkak ... and definitely no 450  Cool  ... but where there is a will there is a way. Personally I will rather send my 40 year younger son out to do battle (then I am 11 years older than you)  Grin

Well I'll be 48 come next years Roof and I intend giving it a go without having done a single Enduro yet, only the local Offroads  Roll Eyes

Saddle up and get fit, we can k@k off together  Wink

The worst that can happen is you don't finish it or end up sleeping in the mountains.

The best is that you can earn a finishers medal for the toughest extreme enduro in the world and young nubile women will throw themselves naked at your feet and offer you all kinds of sexual favours because of your Super Hero Status  Shocked Wink    icon_thumleft

Buff maybe we should team up together?  The woman throwing themselves at me was the convincing part.  Let us get through the holiday part and devise a plan of action early in the new year.  Always better to train together.

My suggestion is a 200 2t
I prefered the 200 to my 300 for this years Roof, lighter, enough power and it does not tire you as much as the 300 does. icon_thumleft

I've already got a partner sorted for the race but you're more than welcome to come and train with us over the weekends  icon_thumleft Chances are you'll get sorted with a race partner during the course of the year as you get to know the guys anyway, we train with a very lekka bunch of okes that are super chilled out  icon_thumleft

We've decided to approach this race as a team event, pretty much like the Cape Epic because that's the only way we're going to get through it if the conditions deteriorate like they did this year. The trick is to find a partner of similar fitness and skills so you don't end up holding one another up and the one rider getting frustrated.

I'd suggest you look at a 250/300 2 stroke or 250 4 stroke for the event  icon_thumleft That 450 will kill you for sure  Shocked

Consider the     http://www.seatoski.co.za/   event, this is a very good technical 3-day event for preparation for the Roof.

Bronze = afkak
Siiver = afkaker
Gold = afkakste

I am sure the old Roofies like Edgy will chime in the detail.  icon_thumleft Seems like these days much of the technical stuff is the same difficulty ... just lots more of it further up the food chain ... and mountains  Evil

Bronze is a good place to start considering only 16 of them finished this year  Wink The Bronze route will take a good club rider the best part of 6 to 8 hours to complete a stage... if the weather behaves.

The classes are Bronze / Silver / Gold.

You all start and finish at the same spot each day but the distance and number of mountain passes you do differs.

The race has 4 stages:

Thurs - Stage 1 - Around the Houses (tarmac) and straight onto
Stage 2, the Time Trial (60km). Bronze, Silver & Gold all do the same route on Stage 1 and 2.
Fri - Stage 2
Sat - Stage 3

Seriously, this is one of the most insane events I've ever been to in my life. It's intense, raw and bloody marvelous... and I was just part of a seconding team  Grin I cannot begin to explain the emotion on that final mountain as those guys come sweating and spinning their way up there, it's mind blowing. I get goose bumps just thinking back to it. It's something you want to be part of, even if you're just a spectators, it's that good  icon_thumleft
