I clocked my Suzuki TL1000 at 280km/h
now THAT felt fast...
true speed was probably closer to 260 though

sorry, is this thread still about KTMs or can we mention any bike?

This is a lekker fred.

Does anyone have an opinion on GPS speed accuracy???
Couple a months ago in the Bike Sa there were claims made by certain individuals of 320+Km/h on various superbikes as measured on their GPS's. Then Piet Spoed shot their claims down with some long explanation on why the GPS at that speed does not give an accurate reading.

Life's too short.

As far as I remember, the whole explanation re GPS speeds were about constant speed.  The GPS lag has to do when accelerating, but if you maintain your speed, the GPS is about the most accurance you can get.

Somebody please find that article and post.

http://www.gpsinformation.net/main/gpsspeed.htm

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15519597

and from quickly browsing through GPS forums I learnt that a typical GPS has a 0.5mph error
and that undulating roads and tree cover will also cause errors
all these errors will cause the GPS to give a speed readout that is actually FASTER than what was really achieved

Well - in THAT case... indicated 315 kph  ;D

I'm not really at liberty to say... Oh no, I meant to say on a race track!  ;D

No, it was back in the days when I was still young and stupid... Now that I'm not so stupid anymore, I would think twice about doing it again, or at least seriously weigh up the pros and cons... it is totally exhilirating though.

If something goes wrong you're proper, proper fkecud though...

OK, I asked my very clever engineer brother-in-law about the weight/topspeed issue.  Here is what he had to say:

Swaer,

Massa speel beslis ‚??n rol.

3.         Energie se eenheid is Joule, oftewel N.m oftewel Kg.m^2/s^2 as mens dit in die basiese SI eenhede uitdruk.  (Die punte is vermenigvuldigingstekens).

6.         In werklikheid neem dit by topsnelheid tipies so 75% van ‚??n kar se krag om windweerstand te oorkom en so 25% om die massa voort te beweeg.

Now put that in your pipe and smoke it! ;D ;D

Its fine, I was just wondering the whole time.  It made sense that weight does play a role, then I started doubting myself again.......

Just one question:  Why do heavy trucks have huge powerful engines? ;)

what engineering does your brother in law do?

I fear this is incorrect though , please do reseach again.

Lostdog , eish u go whichever way the wind blows my china

Confusion is being created between acceleration and top speed...it is important to bear in mind that at top speed no more acceleration is actually occuring ....

assuming identical machines with identical Cd's except one is heavier than the other ,the lighter one will certainly accelerate quicker ,the heavier one will take longer longer but the top speeds will remain pretty much unaffected.

pushing a mini or a bedford is about acceleration

intuitively weight would play a big role , in reality it is a very very small role in top speed
