Let the games begin.....
From Brett: "The 405km liaison from Rosario to the start of the Special Stage is expected to take about six hours - 1530 SS start, SA time"

From Allan Roberts #165 facebook post
"There is nothing I can say to describe todayís events-itís bigger than anything Iíve ever seen, the crowds, the amazing people, the atmosphere, so thatís it, the final parade and crossing the podium, the riders briefing, the photo of all moto riders, itís all done. My road book is marked, my camel back full and my bike ready, it all starts tomorrow-early. My start time for stage 1 is 0527, but first itís 405 km liaison just to get to the start of the special, then 180 km race stage(special) and then another 205 to the camp."

David's team:
"The big day has arrived. We are 5 hours ahead and David then has to ride 629km to the stage. Our time, that means that he will start racing quite late in the afternoon, so hop back into bed or do your shopping in the morning. I'll monitor the web sites for an estimated time and then update as he goes through the waypoints.
If I'm not mistaken the times will be relatively short, but multiplied by a factor. We'll see if this is the case when final standings are posted.
I will be tracking some friends and other riders who should be on pace to finish where David is aiming.
In Stage 1, 2013, David lost time getting the waypoints to register and he went from 102 to 172. It's a very short stage, so anything small that goes wrong will cost places. Let's hope for a 30 place gain. A placing better than 102 will be good, but if he can get to 72, his race will be so much easier than last year.
Deep breaths. N'

Today's route's from Dakar.com:
The competitors will wake up early to set off along the road in the region of Cordoba and start the race on some narrow tracks which will require the utmost vigilance. Each one will still be very fresh allowing them to tackle the stony sections or the blind jumps serenely. The competitors' driving skills will be rewarded at the finish, where they will have already clocked up 800 kilometres. Although the gaps will not be significant at this stage of the race, it is nevertheless important to maintain their position in the part of the standings that they are aiming for!

Riaan:
"Ready to go. Nerves have set in, starting at 4h20 tomorrow on a 809km stage with a 180km special. Thanks for all the wising well messages."
If I read the times correctly, he just started the liaison.

Todays route, from the legendary Hogswild

This is my Google Earth file showing the exact course for Stage 1. The Google Earth imagery is pretty good in some places, and terrible in others. I have other imagery I use when the GE imagery is bad, which explains why my track is slightly "off the road" in some places.

The second picture is of the decent on the Stage 1 liaison just after the finish.
