Media Report - Carol Wiltshire

Local offroaders strutt their stuff at the Swartland 200.

139 Riders from across the Cape Peninsula gathered to compete in the first round of the Western Cape Offroad Club Championship in Riebeeck West on Saturday 8 February 2014. With perfect weather conditions in the morning, neither the dust nor speed could stop these riders from pulling all stops to take the win in this first round. Support crews were their in support of their riders, ready to refuel and get their riders out of the pit in the shortest possible time.

Our youngest rider, Jariegh van Lill, who is only 4 years old, got on his 50cc quad and showed them who was in charge.  With a short technical track of about 5km the 50cc bikes took to the track and the small wheels battled each other with Hennie Roux, a Wellington lad, once again dominating the field with Alexander Newton from Newlands hot on his heals followed by one of our lady riders Annika Groenewoud. In the Junior Bikes category and a challenging track of about 17km of sand, riverbed and flatout fields, Troy Sullivan from Durbanville took the win, with Kyle Wiltshire having to settle with a 3rd position on the podium. When the big boys opened their throttles it was a battle of egos between Matt van Galen from Melkbosstrand who won the race and Jeandre Radyn who came home in 2nd place.
On the Senior side a large group of riders lined up their two wheelers to tackle the 40km loop, strutting the likes of John Webb, a previous WP regional champion & national competitor was in a league of his own and the Masters class Albert Hintenhaus, (former Dakar competitor) took the honours. In the ladies class winner, Riki Mans dominated the class ahead of Riana Thiart and Martie Bergh. On the quad side bad luck struck some of the competitors who could not finish but not without giving it a fight with Brodie Jacobs from Somerset West taking honours in the Junior Open Quads whilst Dominque Lopez looked comfortable winning the ladies quads. Senior quads winner, Anton vd Bergh started his season successfully defending his title against Lourens Vervaart and Clive Crouse.
VIP quests,  George and Roland Booker, directors of the Namaqua African Rally and Alexander Nel director of Amageza rally all competed two as part of their training for the 3500km Namaqua African Rally
Much fun was had in this family day of racing and all riders are now preparing for round 2 of this championship taking place in Botriver on 15 March 2014. Entries are open so come join in the fun. For more info see our website www.westerncapeoffroad.co.za or contact Clive on 0829001334.
