Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk Ė Montagu

Situated: at the northern end of Kerk Straat, between Piet Retief and Bath Streets

When it was founded in 1854, it was the 60th congregation of the Church, but due to the merger of the congregations Middelburg, Kaap, and Middelburg-Uitsig, it is now the 59th oldest still existing congregation. With the laying of the cornerstone on 19 April 1851, Dr. William Robertson, pastor of Swellendam, expressed the hope that this would be the beginning of a new congregation, named after the then colonial secretary, Sir John Montagu.
In October 1854 the presbytery of Swellendam gave permission for a new congregation to be formed in Agter Cogmans Kloof.

Mr. D.S. van der Merwe, who bought the farm Uitvlucht in 1844, sold the first erven in 1851 and donated a site for the erection of a church building. The foundation stone of the new building was laid on 1 November 1858, and the church was consecrated on 21 May 1862. Until then, services were held in a small building, located in Bath Street where the present-day Jordaan flats are situated.
The borders of the congregation include the Koo valley (northwest) and Karoo area above Ouberg Pass (northeast).

On Wednesday, May 21, 1862, the present church building of one thousand seats was inaugurated.

It is a pity that one cannot see the majority of photos on the first 20 pages as one does not want to duplicate the photos of the many amazing church buildings there are in South Africa

PniŽl Congregational Church
Situated on the R310 about 12km NE of Stellenbosch towards the R45
The church was apparently designed by Leon di Blique, an artist from Stellenbosch.

I could not find more information about this beautifully situated church.

I love the mindfulness of the surroundings in the design, I would like to see this from different angles  :thumleft:

Sorry, I cannot oblige with more photos from different angles, as we only lived in Stellenbosch for a year in 2016, when we returned from Germany to allow our one  daughter to complete a postdoc in the Physics Dept. and I did some taxonomic work in the Zoology Dept. at Stellenbosch University, before returning to Europe.

This stay in the Western Cape allowed me to travel around the area on my sister's spare Honda XR 250 Tornado, as I had spent most of my years in SA in the Eastern Cape.

Perhaps someone in the Western Cape could oblige you :thumleft:

Beautiful old sandstone NG Kerk Rosendal (obviously when it was a bit wetter around these parts).
Cornerstone laid down in July 1914  and the opening ceremony took place April 1916. Building would have been finished earlier but WWI slowed construction

Many have seen St. Patricks-on-the-Hill in Hogsback now; this was the tiny chapel in 1979, before any extensions were made.

See Reply # 443 on previous page:   http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=14253.msg4641858#msg4641858

And long before the rebuild after the fire in 2010.
It had snowed very heavily in the winter of 1979 - was the most snow I had ever seen up there since 1964 (until I left SA in 2012).
