I see Showmax is now free with DSTV premium.

Nothing is free, especially with DSTV.  They'll sell it as a free add-on and then will have a nice little increase waiting for their subscribers.  This is just a way to try and get more people to subscribe to DSTV.  While still showing reruns after reruns after reruns.

We were at a B&B the weekend with a TV connected to DSTV.  While waiting for SWAMBO to get ready for the evening I quickly did some channel hopping.  And all it showed me was that I made the correct decision to ditch DSTV.  There was nothing worth watching.

+1

I spend a fair amount of time in hotels with a selection of DSTV channels.  I don't miss it in the least.  I think it's been five years now already :)
The three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40 and a hammer.  If it moves and it shouldn't, use the duct tape.  If it doesn't move and it should, use the WD-40.  Otherwise use the hammer.

so,  set up my new tv boxes yesterday.
what a pleasure after the pi's.
android 7.2.1,  3G RAM,  30G storage.
deleted the preloaded version of kodi (apparently the preload is a beta version),  and installed v17.4,  also installed mobdro and aptoide tv.
my god,  this box is a giant leap forward from the pi.
i think i have found true happiness.

I connected my DSTV to the internet yesterday because of the showmax thing. The DSTV catch up content is now more than double and available for streaming. The problem for me with DSTV is always finding something to watch while you're in front of the TV. Now with all the added catch up content it's a lot better. They also have pretty much all the months movies available for streaming. Even Woema is now on catch up. Not that I'd advise anyone to actually watch woema

I'm using my old laptop now and there are definitely more streams available on Krypton and the buffering seems better :thumleft: Apparently there is a work around to get the newer version of andriod onto the old boxes so that you can load Krypton but I haven't taken the time to see if it works  :thumleft:

after i watched my BIL set up the 1st,  i saw the future,  and immediately asked if had any extras in the order he brought in.
he did.
i transferred cash immediately.
comparing this box to the pi is like comparing the model t ford to a tesla.
it really is incredible.
also,  mobdro is a brilliant app for live tv.
has all the things you could want.
went into news,  clicked cnbc,  2 seconds later it was streaming - no hunting for sources etc etc.   instant tv.
it also has all the sport channels.   the real test will be streaming moto gp,  but so far i am extremely happy.
even the wife is happy,  and that takes a whole lot,  let me tell you...

I think this is an option for me.  Maybe if someone else here wants to also order we can order together and split shipping?

Hi Koet, I'm interested. I'll take 2 or 3 units. Stripped my moer again last night. DSTV decoder is barely out of warranty and giving me the finger. And I refuse to fork out almost R3k for a new Explora. Daylight robbery.

No worries.  I assume they're all spoken for?  If you have one spare would you be willing to sell it to me?

Koet maybe you should invest in one of these.

I have a Pi 3 and I don't have any issues with it. the other box stuff is good especially with the extra ram and extra hdd space. but my Pi with my 1 TB external drive is working very well

One is for myself, one for a work colleague and one for my in-laws. We stay on the same property and they share our DSTV. So I'll check how compatible the new technology and the older generation humans are and let you know about my 2nd unit. I'll sell it to you unopened and for what I paid if they don't like the setup.

I'm running 2 Raspberry Pis at the moment, one for each TV.  They work really well and I'm happy so far.  H.265 encoding just doesn't play smoothly at all.  Not a biggy.   Miskien krap my gat net vir iets nuuts....

I have to concur with the other Pi owners here. They work great and I want for nothing more.

BUT...let me just add that I only stream, I have no content of my own on an HDD or anything else that might be in 4K or HEVC (H.265). Covenant works great - even better than Exodus ever had - with weekly updates for URL resolves and add-on updates, so I have no need to download anything first before I watch it.

I have also invested in a Real-Debrid account (https://real-debrid.com) that works even better when the interwebz is clogged up from around 19:00 at night. They use all the popular hosting sites like Putlocker, MoviesHD, ONESERIES, etc but they host the streaming links from their own servers so you don't have to share the link with a million other users on the net. And it is cheap and easy to setup in Kodi.
Verantwoordelikheid mors al my tyd en geld!

Since this deals with DATA line I have the next question.
I did not come right with my Telkom ADSL line.
So I cancelled it on 3/08/2017.
I requested IMMEDIATE cancellation, but off course they will do the 30 day thing.
So it should have been cancelled 03/09/2017...right ?
So  my services were disconnected long time ago but this morning 03/10/2017 the ZUPTAS deducted again R 414.41 from my bank account.

Try and phone somebody to get it sorted...IMPOSSIBLE.
Went online and got a online Chat session going with lady.

Bla bla bla bla bla.

I ask.. Does one not pay in advance for service
Telkom confirms YES.
I ask then why deduct money today for services that I will not have in the coming month  as line is already DEAD.
Telkom... It is because of your 30 day notice.

FFS I do not understand how they work.

Ask for conformation email

Telkom:  Sorry sir that can not be done.

I give up.

Had a similar problem....cancelled the account and was told it was settled in full only to be told a month later I owed them R819  :eek7: paid it and made them give me a confirmation e-mail :thumleft: It was apparently for a call out to check the adsl line ??? every time they checked it they found a fault on there side so Im not sure why i had to pay for a callout but I just paid them and hopefully when fibre comes I wont have to deal with them  :thumleft:
