I am in the market for a new (or second hand) MTB.
Mine is kaput.

I am a weekend warrior, so my budget limit is R10,000

Advice or pointers please.
 :thumleft:

What type of riding do you have in mind? I bought a second hand Silverback Spectra Comp 29", and I love the bike  >:D Good offroad and onroad ability with decent components.

Have a look at the bikehub website for info etc

Mainly normal stuff. I usually ride the Tygerberg trails, and do a fun ride every month or so. As I said, nothing serious. No downhill stuff, anyway.
I was thinking joining bikehub but another forum would just waste more of the time I have to spend on Wilddogs

Kaboef, wat het jy en wat soek jy of wat is vir jou belangrik?

Ek het ook rondgekyk in daai prysklas en mens moet gewoonlik iets iewers opgee. Bv dual suspension vs hardtail of 29" vs 26" of goeie shock vs entry level etc.

Those look great guys, thanks.
I will follow up on the ads.

I have a 8year old son who is really into cycling so I have to buy him a decent bike now, so dad has to make do with what is left of the budget.

Nice!  :drif:
So the rumours that the new Epic will also have a "maestro" type linkage with a vertical shock is untrue then?

Hi all,

Yesterday while being in Windhoek for business, somebody mentioned the Nedbank Desert Dash 2017 in Namibia to me, a 370km mtb race to be completed in 24 hours, riding from Windhoek all the way to Walvis Bay in 24 hours, gravel.  Taking place on 8 Dec this year.  There and then I decided to be impulsive and to see if any entries are still open...I have entered the race, got my entry for a mixed 2-man team (girlfriend and I), and paid the entry etc in 5 minutes...! The writing is on the wall, I needed an impulsive challenge, and now I got that challenge laying ahead in 5 months' time.

I am not new to mtb, have done quite a few races over past 3 years, but it is not my main sport, I do the mtb riding as complimentary exercise getting/maintaining fitness for enduro riding such as The Impi Enduro race and so on.  So my question to the more experienced riders please...what is the best way to prepare for this other just getting as much riding time in the saddle?

Thx

Good luck! I've also had this race on my radar..but never had the guts to actually enter it.

I don't think there's a secret to preparing..just get a lot of long / slowish rides in. I did the Transbaviaans (230km) a couple of years back and remember we had to constantly remind ourselves (team of 4) to slow down...it's a loooong ride. It's so tempting to start pushing the pace..but then you risk burning out 8 hours later  :o

Jip this is already good advise to slow yourself down.  I see I made a mistake, it is from Windhoek to Swakop, not Walvis Bay, however still 369km to negotiate through the night... :o

370 Km ?? in 24 hours ?? jeepers some land rovers cant do that let alone a mtb. - that's an average of 16Km  / per hour for the full 24 hours... my boet, I have no idea how to train for it but you best make sure you have some proper cycling shorts and chamois cream...!!
